Hi Ramitm,
The pain on outside of knee from running sounds like it could be illotial band syndrome, a common running injury, which I've also had and is unrelated to FD but is bloody sore! Caused by poor running technique which you will have whilst still have FD as your gait will not be correct so I avoided running whilst I was recovering.
In terms of cycling this is excellent and is something I did a lot of and helped reduce the amount of muscle wastage I got compared to what I should have got over the period of FD, a note of caution as it will be easy to break your ankle if you have to suddenly stop and put your foot out to balance, but keep this up if you can.
My actual recovery didn't give me pain as such as I had numbness which subsided over quite a long time (actually took a while until full feeling returned). As I understand it, it is common to receive pain, I was just fortunate I did not have any. You may find the FD will seem worse at points as the muscles/nerves seem to be easily overworked due to the period of no use, and I found my FD at points did seem worse, particularly after lots of activity. Unfortunately it is not a quick recovery and does take many months. Mine was about a full 12 months until I had full feeling back, although I was walking without a brace after 7 months.
The fact you are feeling pain and have some movement is excellent as your nerves are clearly waking up and transmitting signals, keep up the flexing and cycling and with a bit of luck over time you will get a full recovery like me. I hope this is useful.
Please note this info is based upon my own experience only and I would recommend asking your doc what they think and would suggest.
Best of luck, I hope your recovery continues. :)
Pete
Hi Pete! I'm so happy you fully recovered from your foot drop! And yes I do have some questions to ask of you, if you're still around that is :-D
I'm in the recovering stages and it's quite confusing to me.
I suffered a bilateral foot drop in November last 2013 about the same time as you recovered.
Before that I had last about 20 pounds and was a lot into yoga postures (with a lot of leg crossing) My left foot used to tingle a lot which I ignored as i hadn't been physically active for a long time before that.
My right foot recovered almost instanteously in a week but my left foot gave me hell till about a month or so back. I'm able to dorsilfex the left foot (with some weakness) I've started cycling upwards of 15 miles 5 days a week and daily stretching.
Before this I used to have excruciating pains on the outer leg at the side of the knee radiating downwards which thankfully has now subsided completely.
The issue I'm facing is I keep getting this cramp like feeling in the toes on my left foot. And once in a while it feels like the drop foot is returning. like I'll feel a pull on my leg and weakness when I dorsiflex. This goes away in some time.
Is this normal? was your recovery similar?
I hope to make a recovery in an year like you do.
Also Have you started running?
I get dull pains in my left leg if i run even a short distance. so I don't :-/ but I want to soon! :-D
Hi all,
I have how been contacted by someone who would like this so I am posting it to them to use, therefore it is no longer available.
Best of luck to everyone on here for a recovery ASAP
If anyone has any questions about my experiences or recovery with FD let me know as I am happy to help in any way I can.
Thanks
Pete
Cant believe no-one wants this!!! Any takers??
Google: 'Truelife Matrix Max AFO Carbon Fibre Support' - this is pretty much identical to this one...
Thanks.
Hi Cecelia, lovely to hear from you and fingers crossed your nerve is reawakening! I have had a response from another person just before yours so have requested their address to post it to. If I don't hear back (prob unlikely) I will let you know. If you have a size 8 it would be fine for you if trimmed the front a bit. PS - I recommend (from my own experience) when you see the consultant you push for a full carbon fibre one if pos as they are so superior to the plastic ones. The CF is flexible but strong so it acts almost like it is spring loaded and naturally returns your foot to normal position. The walk I achieved was almost perfect.
Anyway best of luck for more recovery. Will let you know if no reply!
Thanks
Pete
not sure why the Facebook Foot Drop group link came out weird above.
https://www.************/groups/footdrop/
hopefully it will allow the link this time.
Hi -- this is such a nice offer! I have foot drop on left foot ... size 8 shoe.(five years now, due to hip resurfacing surgery) I am wearing one of those old white plastic braces ... I have done much research and have an appointment with the guy who did my origiinal brace ... looking into getting a new brace ...I have had only discomfort with my foot/leg and the drop -- all of a sudden on August 14th, I started getting nerve pain -- hopefully, my nerve is finally waking up! I found a new doctor and went to him -- he gave me neurotin and the script for a new brace ...my appointment isn't for a month but -- I've been waiting 5 years; so a month isn't that long.
There is a group on Facebook: https://www.************/groups/footdrop/
just joined this group -- very nice group of people.
I am sure someone there would love this offer ... please look into group; its very supportive and sharing.
Sincerely,
Cecelia
Maybe not explained properly in msg but this is barely used (less than 10 times max) and is the business. Still have it to give away if anyone wants it? Seems a shame to throw away something which is so well designed and useful and way better than standard NHS issue.
