Acid Reflux laryngitis, Overall Sore throats

Hi everyone. I have been suffering from GERD for years. I recently got a teaching job, and from day one of talking I've felt extreme throat pain. My ENT confirmed I have Reflux Laryngitis, and ramped up my meds. I was taking Nexium, and keeping weight under control. Now she added Zantac and some allergy meds for my post nasal drip. Has anyone had a job that they talk all day, and due to the GERD had severe throat pain and/or Laryngitis? How long did it last? Did you eventually have to quit your job so that you didn't have to talk as much? I suffered through the first week, but paid dearly for it. Didn't talk for 4 days to rest my throat. Went back to work for one day, now I'm back to calling in sick. Not sure if I'll make it as a teacher. Any personal experiences would help. =O(

I had some minor GERD for years, nothing serious, and suddenly developed symptoms like you express.  I think you should see a specialist, earlier than later, and have at least an Endoscopy to determine the extent of the damage.
Be sure to take the medications exactly as recommended in the meantime.  If you take them in any other fashion, they will just make expensive urine.
I had a job where speaking was essential and I started to sound like Louie Armstrong or Kim Carnes, I eventually had surgery that completely fixed the problem.  The first step is education, find exactly what is going on, and an Endoscopy will supply that information.  Since the surgery, my vocal chords are somewhat healed and I speak much more clearly.  Be cautious about taking over the counter cures, get professional advice.  Keep us informed!

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

I am glad to see you are on a H2 blocker as it may he too much histamine in your system (post nasal drip) I too am on a H2 blocker and it works where a PPI did not....but I added a anti histamine b4 bed and I am doing sooooooooo much better....I did modify my diet which is very important as well.....
Talk to your Dr about a possibility that you over produce histamines and if an antihistamine along with the Zantac will help....

Another possibility could be is a thyroid issue, was that ruled out?

Good Luck
