Alternative medicine for GERD anyone had success?

I am 23 and suffer from GERD. 2 years ago I saw a gastroentorologists for 3 years he pescribed all types of medicines purple pill, omeprazole, ramitidine etc..

None of them ever helped at all. So I lost my job and left things as they were for 1 years symptoms did not get better or worse. Did notice that once a week I had bad acid reflux.

My symptoms have alaways been sore throat, burping even when I drink water, feeling full all the time...

This May of 2011, I was diagnosed with h pylori again, i gues it never went away so I took both antibiotics and omeprazole ever since then I benn on the natural medicine but I have been getting more sore throatttssss

As of now I am seeing a naturopathic dr.
She said to take

Mastic Gum-500mg 2 pills every morning
GastricComplex-
Probiotics-Jarrow formula
DGL
Multivitamin-Nature Made
Slippey Elm-lozenges
Manuka Honey-Active 15
I am on a gluten free diet also
I weigh about 140 really thin 5'8
I eat super good. breakfast oatmeal or gluten free cereal with almond milk
Snack-mix nuts and banana
Lunch-gluten free sandwich with unprocessed tky with no fillers, spinach, hummus, goat cheese
Snack-Carrot juice or celery juice
DInner-Brown rice, chicken *boiled, steamed veggies, salad.

What tests should  I ask for?

It has been 3 weeks and no real improvement, I am going to see her in one week again any advise on natural medicine ppl with GERD?
The most bothersome is the sore throat....CAn anyone share a success story with GERD naturally?

I understand what you mean about natural medicine, because my grandfather did what your sister's patient did, too.  But, since Alzheimer's caught up with him before anything as serious as the bladder bursting did, he was forced into a nursing home where other people made palliative decisions for him.  So, he finally had the prostate surgery that was necessary to make him more comfortable.  His prostate was so enlarged, it was the biggest the surgeon had ever seen.  Two things were at play here:  My grandfather came from a generation of men who didn't believe in seeing a doctor and Alzheimer's robbed his thinking ability.  Fortunately for him, circumstances beyond his control took the decision against having the prostate surgery away from him.  How little he knew that this was in his best interests, since the Alzheimer's came along and destroyed his memory and his thinking ability.  He no doubt had Alzheimer's for many years before anyone recognized it, too.  He wasn't even diagnosed 'til he was placed in the care of a nursing home.  This was many years ago.  Now there is better medical help for both the prostate condition and Alzheimer's disease.  I actually know someone under the care of a conventional doctor for this same prostate condition that is so common in men.  So far, the person hasn't had to have the surgery--yet.  But, he isn't an old coot who won't have the surgery if it gets to that point either.

Yes, people do need to be careful, but they should be careful and balanced with all types of medicine.

Because of what my grandfather did, my mother threw out the baby with the bathwater and wouldn't so much as use a multi-vitamin for herself or any of her kids.  Clearly, this approach is harmful, too, since I now have health issues from nutritional deficiencies that occured during my youth.

So, now, as an adult I take the integrative approach.  I see a naturopath when I can, but I actually see mostly conventional doctors.  Truth be told, I am fortunate that most of my conventional doctors take a middle of the road viewpoint and will work with an integrative approach.  Most agree with the supplements I use, since most of the supplements I myself use are actually vitamins and minerals in the amounts most suitable for me, along with specific amounts of specific nutrients that even the neurologist suggested.  He fortunately used the nutritional route first.  He knows what I'm taking, because I showed him, and it's what he wants me to use.  No freaky herbs, just the proven ones that even a conventional doctor knows are beneficial as protocol for migraine sufferers.  That's just two specific herbs that are standardized that the neurologist wants me to use.  And, these two herbs don't bother my GERD either.

Yes, i have read about that and the strange thing is that sometimes I need to eat or drink something acid producing to feel better, which does mean I'm short of acid, and sometimes (most) its the opposite. Tonight for instance I am not taking a zantac because I sense it will upset me - feel not too bad now but this afternoon felt awful. I know someone who has the same thing and sometimes she needs acid and other times needs antacid . It frustrates because the doctors don't really understand how this happens or really believe it.
What I do is take tissue salts 'acidity' tablets (health store) during the day when I feel upset (only a little piece of a tablet) and sometimes immediately feel better or worse. That tells me to have something to eat or drink either way - couple of mouthfulls of juice or the opposite like a donut.

Have you ever read this book? Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD

Have you ever thought about having low acid? Naturally as we age we tend to produce less acid...Just curious if you read about this.... If the Zantac makes your acid worse did you consider having low acid...

Gluten beacuse I always had it in my diet ate too much of it...Recently when I eliminated it, I actually felt a little better...Dairy never was a friend of mine just ate it cause I loved cheese....

Thanks for your advise.FYI i felt better this week than the last 3....

When I say acid I mean they have an acid type of affect on my stomach. I know that the acid/alkaline charts rate certain foods like lemons as alkaline but if I eat citrus it nearly kills me. I eat avocados daily for cholesterol balance but they don't particularly agree with my stomach. Nuts are hard to tolerate. I can only tell you what helps me and vice versa. I take Zantac effervescent for relux and have tried all the others. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. and they have the opposite effect - make me worse. Why do you avoid gluten and dairy? are you intolerant or have you just decided to because its the current fashion? Bread and milk make me feel better usually. Do Try the slippry elm powder.

I always been thin even before these symptoms started before that...I would like to gain weight but have to be in a smart way also. I don't choose to be skinny but it is a matter of controlling my condition.

The celery and carrot juice from the pH acidity and alkaline charts these veggies are very alkaline above 5....

Just curious to know, do all veggies make you feel bad?

The slippery elm- I was taking, I stopped I was taking it Lozenges apparently it did not work for me however since you mentioned the powder I could try it and see how it works....

Fatty foods- I try to get those in my diets by eating Mixed nuts, Almond butter, Avocados and Olive Oil...Im not a good cooker at all so do simple meals but I am open to suggestions as long they dont contain gluten, chillie, dairy, sauces....

The goat cheese is very acidic? Interesting, i will look into that....
Thanks for the response

Is there any healthy foods that help you at all?
Are you taking any medications also? PPI's, H2, acid reducer? Or Natural Stuff?

From my years of experience I would strongly suggest you stop the goats cheese (very acid), and the carrot and celery juices. Most of us long term GERD sufferers have trouble with fresh (raw) vegetables and most fruit.
Slippry elm powder is something you could try - two or three times a day take a teaspoon full mixed in tepid water - NOT juice. Do this for a week and see what happens. Also it sounds like you might be  slim (unlike me) and eat foods that don't put weight on??
This sounds stupid but believe me a lot of people have found some relief by eating something small and 'fatty' when you feel really bad like a hash brown or small serve of fries or pastry gives instant relief. Me for example, and I've battled this for 30 years! Give it a shot - a couple of mouthfuls will tell you something either way.
I would be very interested in the result if you do try it.  Best wishes

Since u were dx'd with H.Pylori...it can take several rounds of anti biotics to get rid of it...have u been tested to see that it is gone?

Antibiotics  kill all bacteria the good with the bad...and u will continue to feel badly until u replace the good bacteria u need to break down the food u eat....

I take Phillips colon health...just started them...but already seeing a big difference....my dad is on them as well after a bout with H,Pylori...he was on the Align but that is very expensive I could not afford it and by doing my own research found that the Phillips does the same thing for less...and like I said so far is working for me.

Does the Jarrows suggest 3 capsules a day?....the Phillips suggest 1  capsule a day, and that had me running to the bathroom so I take 1 every other day and it works better for me....if u r taking this and going that frequently u r still out of balance...mayb u r getting too much...review the instructions.

Have u discussed this with ur Dr...mine is reviewing and overseeing me taking the Phillips.

Please, be very careful with 'natural' medicines.  My sister is a Naturopath, trained in the USA and also worked six years in China studying accupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, and is very nervous about how the internet is influencing people into areas that are flat out dangerous.  To wit:  one of her patients she was working with went on some hair-brained treatment for prostate swelling with some 'natural' medicines he learned about on a natural health board.  His prostate swelled to the point that his bladder couldn't be relieved, and he burst  the bladder.  He will have the discomfort of using a catheter to pee for the rest of his days.  My sister talks about the value of using 'natural' medications as a preventative measure, but once a condition is established, 'natural' products are far less effective than Western procedures.

I tried to use 'natural' products for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and was rewarded with two heart attacks, eight heart stents, a pacemaker and heart bypass surgery.  Had I just taken conventional medications, I'd avoided all that.  Once I took conventional medications, my blood pressure, cholesterol, etc dropped to safe levels, but 'natural' medications and strict diet helped, but didn't go far enough.

We all have a point of view,  that's mine.  Be very careful.  It sounds like you have a potentially dangerous condition.

Jarrows is good.  It is the same strain as FloraStor that my own sliding fee naturopath recommended, but at a much more affordable price.  I plan on finding out which kind my friend got from the supplement store that she said is greatly recommended for GERD in particular.  In any case, Jarrows is still good.  Some information I've been listening to is that probiotic formulas that has the greatest number of strains is actually the best over all.  The ones I've been taking are made by the Swanson Vitamins company.  I just looked at the container and it lists five different ones.  The first three are the ones that start with "L", which I heard Dr. Oz say are the most important ones.

This is amazing, too, because I don't usually watch his show, but I've noticed that he is usually geared towards integrative medicine, even though he was trained in conventional medicine.  I usually already know some of the stuff he mentions on the shows that I do catch.  Not all, because no one knows it all, but I'm usually already doing many of the things he talks about on the few shows that I've caught.  I've heard some consider him a quack, but I don't think he is.  I take what information I can use.  I forget more than I remember, but I know he has his own website that one can refer back to.

Hi ppl thank you for responding Furballsmom and Selma

Furballsmom, do you think we can exchange emails...I can share what I do with my naturopathic dr and you can share yours if this is ok with you plz. Thanks and Selma if you are okay with it thanks.

2 years ago I did 2 endoscopy with a gastroentorologists, the results were normal according to him and the results I have. Minor irritation that was all. After that he prescribed medicne for 2 years none of those medications I mentioned ever worked for prescribed by him. He also did xrays, stomach emptying, barium swallow and nothing bad.
I was on PPI for 2 years especially omeprazole with other ones..In the end the gastro dr. called it IBS I dodnt think is this. I dont have diarrhea at all. I do have 4-5 bowel movements a day and I am thin and young.

I lost my job and lost my insurance, they laid me off. So for a year I didnt see the dr...I had burping the whole day, sore throat somtimes and had some acid reflux if I ate greasy food. Now turn to May 2011...Every once a week I started getting a sore throat for the whole day...Diet was still relatively healthy...Keep in mind the burping, sore throat never went away ever..I am 23 and I started ahving all this since I was 19 yrs old.

I went to my school dr. and they did a blood test for h pylori came back as i was exposed...SHe gave me the antibiotics i took them for 2 weeks and after i finished I saw a naturopathic dr. she told me to take everything I mentioned up there...but has not helped...What tests or what else can I ask her?

These last 3 weeks ahve been bad, I have sore throats almost the whole day...is making miserable my gf gets mad at me....and I need some ppl who know what it feels like...
I am taking probiotics...

Is there any digestive enzymes good ppl from this forum you reccommend?
Any specific probiotics? I am taking Jarrow Formula
Any natural thing for my throat

U need to look at ur own health history...when was the last time u were on an antibiotic....how often in the last few yrs did u  use them...they could have caused an imbalance in ur digestive track by killing off all the good bacteria....ask ur Dr about trying a probiotic...they replace all the good bacteria and restore the natural balance....this will help with the digestive issues including bloating , IBS and  even cholesterol levels...do look into it...it is the best natural way to address what is going on inside u...modifying diet as well....but u can get off GERD meds if u use them...I was on prilosec and no longer need to use it...I use a H2 I when I am going to have spicy food only...and that is once in a while but it is getting better with use of the pro biotics.

I don't know about tests, if you haven't already had the upper scope called endoscopy.  But, I just ordered some natural supplements I read information about from a natural doctor that hosts webinars.  Research Terry Naturally and Europharma.  Anyway, he suggests sea buckthorn oil and D-limonene.  These are not expensive.  He explained something about the D-limonene that I never heard of.  Apparently, this is made from oranges, but it's in such a way that it works to coat the mucosa of the stomach lining in much the same manner as the DGL.  I didn't have success with DGL, and this doctor isn't a huge fan of it himself.  He isn't against if for the ones that find that the DGL works, and will suggest it for people that it works for.  Since you're going back to see the natural doctor in a week, I would ask her what she thinks about these two supplements.  You would certainly get more thorough information than what I just told you off the top of my head.

Oh, and for the most part, except on occasion, I have been able to steer clear of the PPI medications, because I'm trying my best to deal with this naturally, too.  I don't like the stuff I've heard about long-term use of PPI medications.  I understand occasional use short-term, as that is actually what is even written on the packages.  But, like you, I prefer to try to deal with this naturally and with diet and exercise (to the best of my ability).
