Confused

I am 19 years old and I have been suffering with abdominal pains for a year now along with chronic diarrhea. I have noticed that I am a lactose intolerant and have stopped eating/drinking dairy products. Once in awhile I would vomit for no reason. I went to the emergency room thinking that I had appendicitis but I was diagnosed with ovarian cyst and gastroenteritis. I recently went to see a gastroenteritis doctor and had to do an endoscopy and colonoscopy test. I finished both of the procedure today and got the results back with normal duodenum, Normal stomach, a hiatus hernia was found, esophagitis seen and a normal colon. My doctor did a biopsy but I am not sure what or where he did the biopsy for. After the procedure, the RN nurse told me that I have acid reflux. I don't really understand this. Can someone please explain what this mean and what might happen next?

I have a hiatal hernia and have not had surgery or even had a Dr suggest I need it....I avoid foods I know will cause me issues, and I now take meds only when needed and not on a daily basis....and u can take Vit D to help with ur bones....

If ur Drs feel ur hiatal hernia is causing a problem check into having it manually manipulated instead of going straight to surgery...it may help u....

Yes, stress can add to this issue, try yoga or some meditation...the best thing is u recognize that as a possibility so that is good.

BTW-I too am a very picky eater, always have been, but it is possible to eat well.......and avoid things that can cause a flare up.

I have a selective eating disorder so I am really picky with food. I have not been drinking soda for three years now. I am not fond of coffee either. I only get Starbucks frapp once in awhile.  When I was younger, I ate greasy foods but when I got older, I stopped eating it so often. Only once or twice a month that's all.

I am still in school so maybe this is one of the reason because I am usually stressed out from all of the school work.

As of now, I am prescribed to take omeprazole and read the side effects of the medicine itself, I am hoping that I do not have to take this medicine for the rest of my life because I do not want my bones to become weaker. Also I do not really believe in taking medicines. Also for the hiatal hernia, is this something that I should be concerned about? Would people do a surgery to remove the hiatal hernia?

I am going to call my doctor soon to find out more results from the endoscopy and colonoscopy and see why the biospy was done and what the results are from the biospy.

Thank you

Well I am not a medical professional so I really do not know, I can say nething is possible....

More foods can be acidic then u would imagine.....OJ, strawberries, raspberries, tomato sauce,.....foods that are good for us can also have pitfalls too...

What about fried foods. u did not mention greasy foods...french fries, chips....

Drinking soda's, coffee...black teas....

I have IBS and it can be due to a hiatal hernia or other issues ...Chron's does not have to be the only reason for ur bowel issues....

I would also tell u stress can cause these issues to flare....so try and relax.

Keep us posted on what u find out.

Thank you for your response and welcoming to this forum.

I recently received a prescription (PPI,  i assume), it is called Omeprazole 40 mg capsules.

I do not really eat lot of acidic or spicy food. I do not smoke either. I drink alcohol once in awhile but not too often or not too much.

After my endoscopy yesterday, I'm starting to feel lot of pain in my esophagus and once it awhile it would hurt to swallow. Is it part of the post op from the endoscopy? Should I be too concerned about this or not?

I have been trying to exercise but I have not been able to lose any weight but to gain some. I thought I might have slow hormones and had my thyroid checked out and everything is normal.

I am still waiting for the results from the biopsy. Im not sure why but I have a feeling that I might have Crohn's disease.. any thoughts?

thank you

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

Acid Reflux or GERD is  too much acid that build up and can cause  many symptoms...one is nausea, and vomiting depending on the individual...as we all will have different symptoms.

Ur Dr may put u on a PPI or IIH  to help reduce the amount of acids....along with the med u will need to modify ur diet and lifestyle...

Certain foods, that are acidic, greasy, or spicy can add to the acid build up as well as drinks, carbonated bevs, caffeine and alcohol,.....

Smoking can also make one with reflux feel worse and add to the problem.

See the Health Pages for a list of foods to avoid, and foods that are safe, and tips on lifestyle - http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/list?cid=236
