ENT Specialist or Gastroenterologist?

I have had post-nasal drip and acid reflux for years and I take 20mg of prilosec per day for it. Acid reflux attacks are becoming more numerous & severe. My PCP has not been very responsive so I want to pursue seeing a specialist. Should I contact an ENT specialist or a gastroenterologist?

great advice from "Flycaster".  It is good news that you are going to see your ENT and GI again.  The ENT can do a Larynxscope to see what damage the post nasal drip and reflux is doing to your throat-area and it will be a good idea for you to go for further tests at the GI:  24hr PH study or at least an Endoscopy.

Also, have a look at your current diet and see if you can make some changes there (avoiding acid-triggers, eating 6 small meals, not eating late at night and 3hrs before bedtime) and if you smoke - Stop - and if you have a bit of weight to loose, get on an excercise program.  Your GI can also have a look at your current PPI and make changes/increase it, if necessary.

All the best and let us know how you are doing and keep us updated on developments.

Thanks for your response! I see a gastroenterologist as well as an ENT doctor regularly. They both know my medical history and the meds I'm taking for these 2 disorders, but I've never discussed GERD with my ENT and never discussed post-nasal drip with my gastroenterologist, (until now!). I'll put in a phone call to each and take it from there.

What a great question.

In my opinion, the ENT is going to be able to determine what damage GERD has done to the vocal cords and upper esophagus.  The Gastroenterologist will probably order tests to determine the condition of the lower esophagus and stomach, as well as some of the issues with the upper esophagus.  I'd suggest asking for a referral to the GI doctor first.
Keep us informed.
