I also have GERD and what I think are esophageal spasms which feel like 'missing' heartbeats which I also have from time to time. They have been happening for many years and I have also had a number of cardiac tests and exams because I have had episodes of PSVT's and irregular heartbeats, which are connected to my digestive problems. I take Zantac before bed and sometimes I get to sleep for 4 or 5 hours before the spasm's wake me up, and other nights they just go on and on and I get only short naps through the night. Sometimes the Zantac makes it worse. Sometimes I get really bad if I eat fresh fruit or vegetables; other times eating a bit of fruit makes me feel better. I do know that a small dose of Valium does definately help, but the next morning I feel rotten and my stomach feels bloated and I feel sick because the Valium affects my stomach. Most drugs do. I am a medical problem and the drs have given up. We've tried everything. The advice by Ratnaker Kini is about the best I can agree with. The only other thing the drs told me is that I've been having them for so long I haven't got cancer because I would be dead by now. Sorry I'm no help, but you're not alone. Think of me when you are laying in bed having them, and I'll think of you while I'm having mine. Night Night!

PPI does not efficiently control nighttime symptoms.
For nighttime symptoms H2RA like zantac has to be taken along with PPI.
In addition, lifestyle modifications is also necssary for good control of symptoms.
Lifestyle modifications -
1. Head elevation while sleeping
2. Small frequent meals
3. Going to bed 2- 3 hours after food
4. Avoiding bed time snacks
5. Avoiding smoking and alcohol
6. Avoiding tight fitting clothes
7. Avoiding cola, citrus drinks, carbonated drinks, tea, coffee, spicy food
8. Weight reduction
