PLEASE help - Extreme GERD

My husband is a 45 year old man, with excellent eating and life habits.  6'1", 185 lbs, high fiber, low fat and low spice diet, 1 coffee/day, occasional alcohol, non-smoker, active.  He takes Lipitor and a baby aspirin daily to control cholesterol.  The extreme GERD he suffers from seems to have stumped all of his doctors and has him feeling like an old man.  He feels the onset of acid within an hour of consuming practically anything and it has caused hundreds of sleepless nights over the past 10 years.  Two endoscopies and a colonoscopy have revealed nothing actionable.  He has tried long periods using Prilosec, Pepcid, Zantac, Kapidex and most recently Pantoprazole 40 mg.  His gastroenterologist seems to be running out of ideas.  Is there a specific organ we should be looking at?  A different kind of test?  Should he be taking probiotics?  Should he sleep standing up?  Thank you for any ideas.  At this point we would go to a clinic out of state to get a better result.  We live in Pittsburgh.

Hi!

Turns out I was looking for extra info due to having similar symptoms...what we found in my case is that I went to see a surgeon of a known hospital in DC and he performed a stomach emptying study to see how it was working. To his surprise my stomach was working slower than expected so I took a drug called domperidone that worked for me great for about 1 month or so (no symptoms whatsoever then). However although a new stomach emptying study show a normal stomach, my symptoms have come back with a vengeance it seems...so I'm still searching for an answer...next step is to get a stomach "impedance test". Have they monitored his acid with a so-called "pH Bravo"?

Hi....I agree to get checked for H.Pylori.....

and I would also say to have the Gall Bladder checked.

I would think, that if ur  DH had a hiatal hernia u would know that by now.

The gastrin levels sound like something to rule out also....I do not know much about it.

It is easy to be misdx for many of these...be patient, but persistant.

I am 38 years old and have suffered from what I thought for many years was GERD.
When I say many years it is now going on 22 years.  What I would suggest is this:

1. Check for halabacter prylori (spell?)
2. Probably most important he should do a  gastrin level of his blood. This test will help determine if he has gastrinoma.  It is a tumor that basically shoots siginals over to the stomach to produce ungodly amounts of acid. This is what I have and was misdiagnoised with GERD up until about 5 years ago.
3.  He may need a nissen wrap
