PPIs and Relief of Symptoms

How long does it take for PPIs to reduce symptoms if they are going to work?  I tried 40mg protonix for 3 weeks, then twice daily for 2 weeks and now 40mg nexium for 5 days (so far) and none of them have got rid of the symptoms.  They help a bit but I'm still getting almost constant asthma symptoms (on max dose of advair), nausea, coughing and clogged nose/ears after eating and bloating.

The only thing that works is not eating, doesn't matter if I stay away from the foods that are bad for GERD, any food seems to give me symptoms.  And I should be increasing my food intake because I've lost 4 pounds in the last 3 weeks and only 90ib to begin with.

Any tips?  (I do try to stay upright after eating, eat slow and healthy, don't eat after 7pm)

Sounds like a combo of a few things may be going on....being in a chair even a recliner is better than lying flat, so I am sure that helped.

Antibiotics kill all bacteria good with the bad....and u need the good bacteria to help with digestion.Since u were on a liquid diet u did not need to break down foods, so u would not notice nething I feel at that point,m but add food, with out the good bacteria to break it down, u will feel poorly.

Ask about trying a probiotic....if after having a PH test shows u have low acid.......that can be a big help to u.

I was on antibiotics after my jaw surgery (was almost completely symptom free after jaw surgery when I was on a liquid diet, icing my jaw and not lying down for the month after), the symptoms return with a vegeance when I started eating regular food again.  I think I was on a 10 day course so the lungs were awesome after they were done for about a month and then the regular symptoms came back worse.

Would it make sense that if acid is my problem that the antibiotics lowered the amount and that's why I felt a lot better?  Or maybe just because I wasn't lying down for that month stopped any reflux for happening? .... I slept in a chair for the first month to stop the swelling.

Hi...Flycaster is right u need to talk to ur Dr, ask about doing a PH test to see if infact it is too much acid and not the other way round.....symptoms for too little acid feels the same, so many times what we tell a dr about how we feel sounds like reflux or GERD, when it is the opposite, This can occur if u were on a recent round of antibiotics???

Do see ur dr and let us know

Tammy, I'm not a health professional, but your symptoms sound more like allergies to a food or drug than to GERD.
PPIs need to be taken 1/2 hour to one hour before the meal.  If they are taken in other circumstances, they simply won't help you.  I assume you are seeing a health professional about your problem.
Keep us informed.
