Rib pain with acid reflux/GERD?

I've been horribly sick the past week since I drank a tall glass of lemonade, with horrible chest pain and stomach ache that left me unable to walk or sometimes even move at all, for seven days now. I tried every antacid under the sun but nothing was helping. I went to the doctor three days ago, all she did was prescribe Protonix, which didn't help, only made things a little worse, until I threw up last night what looked and smelled like lemonade, but I don't know if it was just my stomach acid. Now the chest pain and stomach pain are not nearly as bad, but now I have horrible shooting pains on both sides of my lower ribs so bad to the point I can't even walk because every step is agonizing torture. Am I going crazy? What could this be? Does anybody else get rib pain associated with acid reflux?

Hi there,

Have you had a sonar done to check your Gallbladder for Gallstones?  sometimes, when a gallstone pass it can cause these terrible rib pains.  It is possible that you could have reflux as carbonated drinks definitely aggrevates it.

let me know, okay?

Stop drinking lemonade or anything that's acidic.  If the protonix the dr. prescribed do not work, go back and ask to try another kind.  There are 8 different kinds to try!! You have to find one that works for you, or a combination of two or three.  Try ranitidine for short-term.  You can take more than the recommended 1-2 a day if the pain is bad enough.  You will be able to straighten up at least.  But protonix is the way to go long-term.  Have endoscopy done to determine the cause of heartburn.  Good Luck!!

Hi there, sorry you are feeling awful.

I am going through the same sort of thing at the moment.  I am 10 weeks pregnant (but was told I had an acid reflux two months before I got pregnant) and am having a seriously bad flare up at the moment.  Everytime I eat or drink anything, be it little or small, I get severe indigestion with pain starting from my upper abdo (just between my ribcage meeting point) going up into the middle of my chest, and I cannot stop belching.  It's so horrible and uncomfortable, not to forget that every single morning when I wake up I have to spend at least 20 minutes over the toilet coughing up white/thick phlegm/acid stuff, it's disgusting and making me miserable!! Doctor has prescribed me omeprazole and ranitidine together - neither are working at all, tried every thing possible.  Every doctor I see tells me the exact same thing - it's bad acid reflux which is causing the discomfort in my upper abdo - still doesn't make you feel any better though does it!!! It's not them having to live their life like this.

Hope you feel better soon x

Hi...many do get rib pains  associated with gerd....there is a condition called costochondritis.
U may have something else going on with gerd...not being a dr, I can not speculate, but I would suggest if u have not been seen by a GI dr to do so...a PCP can only do so much.

Push for testing to see what is causing the GERD.

Good luck and please post an update : )
