Second Opinion?

Hello

I saw my specialist finally for the first time after my endoscope that was done in November.  I've since had a manometry test and 24hr ph study.
I was disappointed in her lack of empathy and treatment plan.  She seemed to down play my Barrett's because it's only a 3 cm section and mumbled something about how it could develop into cancer but we won't do another scope for 5 years!  I said that's a long time to sit and worry and my GP suggested yearly scopes.  I was explaining this pain I have in my chest that gets worse with swallowing and the trouble I have swallowing solids.  I need at least 3 glasses of water to push down my meals which are getting smaller because its so uncomfortable.  She said I have no contraction issues even though the hospital where I had the manometry done said the results indicate a 60% -70% swallow fail rate.  She decided that the pantoprazole I was taking probably stopped working for some reason and has switched me to Dexilant...indefinitely...if it works.  My lower sphincter is relaxed allowing acid reflux (just a bit she said) so we're just going to use a bandaid solution for now.  Am I overreacting to want a second opinion?  I feel like I was just waved away like it's no big deal to have swallowing issues, pain and Barretts.

Thanks Selma,
I guess I went off on a bit of a rant there. Just frustrated with how long it takes to have all the tests and still feel lost. I plan to seek out a different specialist if my family dr will refer me. I do watch my diet in the meantime and do what I can to help myself.

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

If you do not feel comfortable with a treatment plan, go get another opinion....you know how you feel, and if this is not sitting well with you , it will just cause you more anxiety and worry which is not good for anyone....

Find another Dr and keep us posted....in the meantime do modify your diet to avoid foods and bevs that may trigger symptoms....also elevate the head of your bed to help keep the acids down where they belong....
