gerd discomfort

Hi, I am 45 year old female and I have been having some pain beneath my sternum and at the very bottom of it.  It is not burning, no trouble swollowing and no nausea currently.  This first started in Nov.  Then I had 2 bouts of nausea no vomiting.  Sometimes I woke up at night with the pain.  I had some reflux when I bent over.  I tried the otc for awhile and they  helped some.  I went to  the Dr at the begining of March and he told me to continue the otc and added Zantac at bedtime.  Thngs seem better with occasional burning in the mouth but I am still having the discomfort near the bottom of the sternum.  He told me to increase the otc to twice aday and see if that helps some.  I guess I am better.  I am still burping alot and sleeping better if I behave at dinner.  I am also trying not to eat late.  I only have diet coke once or twice aweek now .  My problem is the pizza and other pasta.  My Dr.  said it could be gallstones or gerd.
Sorry to ramble.  Does this sound correct to you all.  I realize my symptoms don't seem that bad but I am tired of the discomfort. Am I being impatient?
Thanks for listening

It is possible u have a gerd issue. I would suggest u see ur dr and get a dx. It is also possible u may have another issue going on as well.

lol...the stingy mouth ...like if u eat pineapple...lol...yeah I know what u mean...and then it happens with normal foods I do not expect it to...pineapple I expect it.

The journal will be a great way to see ur triggers. And the lifestyle tips are a great addition to help prevent the production of acid.

I am glad u r able to sleep thru the night...wish I could...lol

Thanks for your answer.  I haven't woken up at night in awhile.  I am trying not to eat late at night and no caffeine in the afternoon.  Minimal tomato when eating with the family.  Just enough sauce to help the lovely pasta down.  My mouth is tired of gum but I think that helps.  Today has been pretty good.  I really need to keep a journal of foods and mayby emotions to see if something is the trigger or not.   I really don't have burning in the throat.  My pain feels more like a muscle pain that doesn't last long.  Occaisonally my mouth might feel stingy alittle but not overly so recently.  Does that make sense?
I will make an appt with my gp soon.
Thanks again and have a great day,

yeah that pizza and spaghetti sauce will get ya.  stay away from tomatoes and tomato products, too. in case you didn't know.  your symptoms sound very similar to mine....ANNOYING!!!!  It's like sometimes i just want to cut myself some slack for being so good and eat a piece of chocolate or something, but as soon as i do i regret it.  I can never slack off.  It's terrible and depressing. by the way your symptoms do seem that bad.  I have the same pain at the bottom of my sternum.  its a terrible pain.  i think you should keep taking 40 mg. of nexium or protonix or prilosec or whichever one you take and if you are still having symptoms after a couple weeks or something you should see your doctor again. i wouldn't give it more than a month.  nobody should have to live like this.

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

We all tend to want instant relief...so it is not just you...but it does take quite a while for the OTC PPI's to take effect.

Your dr should also have mentioned the life style changes that help reduce the amout of acid that is produced...it can help add in the level of comfort.

The Health Pages here on MedHelp has foods to avoid as well as the lifestyle tips.

Please post an update on ur progress or any other questions u may have.
