Nonfunctioning gall bladder

I asked the Dr. recently about the fact that I often feel overly full especially after eating full meals but other times as well and need to burp--sometimes excusing myself to make myself burp. This usually helps a lot. Sometimes I also experience bloating but it's hard to pinpoint exactly what brings it on. A hida scan showed my gall bladder was less than 10% functioning and an endoscopy found a hiatal hernia. For now because I have no pain, nausea, etc. (ultrasound found no gall stones) the Dr. has me trying the generic for Prilosec yet I have NO heartburn. So far the medicine is causing a little bit of involuntary burping. Even the surgeon seems unsure what to do at this point and seems to think the hidascan may not be conclusive. Everyone else's posts seems to indicate pain, nausea, or gallstones. Anybody in my situation?

Hello and hope you are doing well.

The causes for bloating could be Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), malabsorbtion, inflammatory bowel diseases and various infections of the colon. You can follow some good lifestyle measures for the bloating to decrease. Eat food rich in plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, avoid spicy and fatty food, avoid smoking and eliminate alcohol. Do not consume caffeinated beverages. Practice good relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation. Exercise regularly. Go for long relaxed walks. Maintain a food dairy and try to identify those foods which are likely to produce bloating and avoid them. If these measures don't help consult your primary care physician.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

My teenage child had similar symptoms and her gallbladder was removed . in her case it was only functioning 4% and they kept saying for years (for her) that it was reflux, etc. and now that it's gone for 3 + yrs I cannot recall the last time she's taken Prevacid .. however, with a hiatal hernia you could be having reflux symptoms.  Is your Dr suggesting surgery to correct it and/or the gallbladder?  My child had not stones, too ... but symptoms with all labs except the HIDA being normal.

Keep us posted.
