I am a 21yr old female and have had pain under my ribs on the right side for over a week now. It gets worse after i eat ANYTHING!! I was admitted into the hospital and had a CAT scan, ultrasound, and xrays and all was fine. No gallstones. I also had a HIDA scan yesterday and my gall bladder is functioning at 65%. It seems that every thing they think could be wrong is fine. And the surgeon im seeing wants to remove my gallbladder even tho he cant find anything wrong with it? i dont know what to do. has anyone else heard of this?

I'm goin for a HIDA scan in the morning and I'm honesty scared.. does it make you sick afterwards..?? i would rather not have it but I've been in soo much pain on my right side and my back hurts as well. I've been sick for weeks, not able to eat anything and have lost so much weight that I'm nothing but skin and bones .. idk what to do, hope to hear something back to help me make the right choice about my problems.

After reading twinstacey's comment, i decided to share abt my story. I had my galbladder removed 3yrs ago as the doc informed me that the gal stones had infected my galbladder. Thinking that it was a small & harmless surgery, i agreed to have it removed. Boy was i wrong. After the surgery, i keep visiting the gents right after eating. People would normally go to the gents a maximum 3 times but as for mine, it was a minimum of 3 times. Not only that, when i touch my left side, the pain is stil there. When i jog, sharp pain will arise after a few minutes. I would seriously not recommend for it to be removed & would sought a 2nd opinion if needed

If you don't mind I would like to know more about your situation. I have been having upper right side pain for 2 years. A hida scan showed my gallbladder at 11%. Two GI Dr's said leave it alone since I do not have gallstones. They said I would probably still have the pain. The pain comes and goes and is easy enough to ignore, but I wonder if I should have it out? Hearing you say you still have the pain worries me though!

trust me i already told them they arent taking anything without a valid reason i want to know what is wrong! and i have heard the same things after having it removed... it will be awhile before i will have the money to go back to the doc but if they tell me whats wrong i will surely post!

Wow, that is wierd how your symtoms are to similiar to mine. My right upper abdomen just below my rib cage starting first then with in a few months I started having the pain in my upper left side and in my back directly behind where it hurts in the front.  I wish I knew what was causing the pain because mine seems to hurt more often than not and every test comes back normal so I still do not have a diagnosis after 6 months of living with this pain. Please post any results or diagnosis as it may help others with the same symtoms.

Please do not have your gallbladder removed if it is functioning at 65%!!!! I had mine removed since I was having pain in my upper right side and it was only functioning 2% and the removal of my gallbladder did not cure the pain. All it did was give me permanent diarrhea. The doc told me that it is rare (about 10%) of people that have there gallbladder have permanent diarrhea but everyone I talk to seem to have the same result I have ( pain still there and constant diarrhea after a meal). I wish I would not have had mine removed but I thought it was going to take away my pain and it did not!!!

they will prob remove it cuz it dropped so much even tho it is still above 35. usually it will keep getting worse. good luck i hope all goes well do your research i have heard bad things when you dont have one.

Although I don't experience severe symptoms, the discomfort and indigestion tend to last for several days each episode lately. Symptoms first began two years ago but have become more frequent and longer lasting. That is why the doctor sent me for a new hida scan. My doctor believes my gallbladder function will continue to decrease since I have lost about half of what I had two years ago.  He recommends removal before I'm sick all the time, but from what I've read on different sites, I am not so sure the surgeon will agree since the ejection fraction is still above 35%.

from what i heard if it keeps decreasing they will remove it and they want to take mine out at 65% just because the symptoms i have say its my gallbladder but the tests say no.... but if it isnt causing too much of a prob then dont have it removed!!!

I have had two HIDA Scans, two years apart. The first one showed an ejection fraction of 87% and the second one was at 45%. I know the 45% is still considered normal. I do have occasional gallbladder symptoms after large meals or fatty foods, but no stones or sludge. My family doctor believes my gallbladder should be removed. I have an appointment the first week of January to see a surgeon. Would a surgeon likely recommend surgery since the results have declined by 42% or refuse because the results are not yet below 35%? Does anyone know if the ejection fraction is likely to continue decreasing?

sounds more like undiagnosed GERD...or possibly esophageal spasms after eating,,,it happens!,,if you gallbladder is testing fine and the numbers are ok,,,dont have it removed!!!.............PERIOD.....chances are you will STILL have the pain even with it gone!!!..read up on it,,it happens alot!!
you can be having upper gastro issues such as gerd and when you eat,it causes issues,,,i have that same thing,and y gallbladder and stuff is also ok,but i do get some reflux and occasional burning in the throat,so i know what y issues are...but i get the pain,and the pain in the back too.....and it can be caused by gerd.

That's the craziest thing I ever heard! Your GB function is more than adequate and your surgeon wants to rip it out? And he's based his decision solely on the fact that you've had some pain in the area for a few days? I realise you may be in considerable pain but  try not to rush into this. Even if you do have gallbladder problem it's not going to kill you any time soon. Try doing a gallbladder flush to clean out your billiary tubes and follow a low fat diet for a weeks. Keep a record of any other symptoms you may be having too. Do you for instance experience a lot of gurgling noises in your upper right quadrant? Have your bowel motions been effected? I realize I don't have the complete clinical picture, but at the very least, get a second opinion. Trust me. You don't want to lose your gallbladder unless it's function is either notably impaired or else the organ is diseased.

my HIDA scan was 65% everything was clean they found nothing wrong and they still want to take it out. mine hurts if i eat anything!!!! the pain is moving to my left side and into my back so now im going to go see a gastro soon to find out what is wrong. good luck!

I have been having the same pain for about 6 months under right rib,first thing they done was to do an ultrasound and they found Gallbladder sludge,no gallstones,so they referred me to a surgeon,he said my gallbladder has to come out,i went for a 2nd opinion to a gastroenteroligst,and he is now sending me for a HIDA scan,,i think they are very quick to want to remove the Gallbladder,i think its obviously there for a reason,,its after i eat fatty foods that i get discomfort in that area,,i would suggest a low fat diet as it sounds like your Gallbladder is not digesting the fatty foods and thats why you are having pain.Did they find any sludge? How was you HIDA scan,is it painful? I have to go for one tomorrow !!! i have been told your Gallbladder is fine if it is functioning more than 35% !! maybe its something else.I am not sure i would let them remove your Gallbladder if they found nothing wrong with it after all these tests.
