7 yr old w/ bowel issues

i took my 7 yr old daughter to the pediatrician recently b/c she has bowel issues.  she has accidents and i'm trying to understand why.  her bowels are always mushy and she can't wipe it all herself and it just seems like she is too old for this.  also about every other month or so it has happened in her sleep and she has awoke screaming b/c she didn't want to move.  she had an xray done and her ped said that there was a large amount of stool in her colon.  she was put on miralax at 1/2 the recomended dose and has been taking it for 2 weeks now.  it seemed that it was working at first but now this afternoon/evening she had back to back accidents and said both times she didn't have the feeling or sensation that she needed to go to the bathroom.  and these accidents do not involve unrinating at all only bowel movements.  it did not just start either it has been going on for about a little over a year now but i thought that it was just a stage and she would grow out of it but she hasn't.  i don't know if putting her on a med like miralax is the right answer and any info will be greatly apreciated!!! thank you!

Miralax is safe and widely used by pediatricians, and is not habit forming.  She should have been taken to see a pediatric gastroenterologist for this.  They would have prescribed something to get ALL of the impacted stool out of her and then kept her on Miralax to keep this from happening again. When a child has stool impaction the other stool can remain is a semi-solid form, even liquid as it goes around the impaced stool. Then due to it's form it can just leak out without the child being aware.  I would keep her on the Miralax and get her in to see a Ped. Gastroenterolgist for an evaluation.  I know it's worrisome and frustrating for both of you, but a GI specialist will get right to the problem.  Take care.
