Abdominal Pain

Hi, my Dad, 61, has a sharp constant pain in the lower eleft side of his abdomen. I t will likely dissapear in a few days. He has had it before about one year ago (at that time they suspected obstruction as he had not been to the toilet). This time he stopped eating and drinking when the pain began but the pain got so bad he went to hospital at midnight. Since he had been to the toilet at about 8am that day, they said there cannot be a blockage and basically sent him home to rest with no tests or investigation taking place. He also fainted on the way to the hospital and now two days later he is still feeling weak and tired. When he was 17 he had an ulcer which was operated on. The pain he feels is close to the scar from that. Could you tell me what investigative procedures he should be requesting as no one seems to be investigating anything.  Thank you

On this occasion they did no tests. The last time this happened over one year ago, they did an x-ray of his stomach and again sent him home to rest. A couple of days ago, when he was taken into hospital as the pain was very severe, his palms and forhead were clammy but he felt really cold. He was sat right in front of the fire but could not get warm but no fever or anything now. I will have a look at diverticulitis so thank you very much for that.

So no ultrasound of major organs, barium X-ray study of the large bowel or maybe even a colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy?

I know that diverticular disease can cause symptoms similar to that - was there any fever associated with these episodes? I know my Mum has had problems like this and it has been due to bowel constriction caused by surgery done years ago to remove a portion of her colon that had severe diverticulitis.

I hope you get some answers.
