Abdominal bloating, gas

I realize that abdominal bloating and gas are very common complaints.  But am very concerned, somewhat anxious and getting depressed, so am seeking any guidance or information that anyone in this forum has to offer.

Developed abdominal bloating, gas, and burning sensation in the navel area about 3.5 weeks ago. No nausea, fever, vomiting, but constipation. Went to ER a few days later.  Abdominal and chest xrays, urinalysis, blood work, abdominal ultrasound were all normal at that time. Was given a prescription for an antispasmodic, which helped. The severity of the bloating, gas has decreased somewhat since but not completely  (occasionally worsens). Still tender around the navel area, and have gas, bloating in lower abdomen, sometimes on the left side, and constipaton/diarrhea. Not sure that standard ultrasound or xrays can say much about intestinal health. Is causing a great deal of anxiety, so need to take further action of some kind. Any feedback or advice would be much appreciated.

Maybe not relevant, but the problem started about 10 days after finishing Levaquin treatment for bronchitis, and 2 days after a rigorous workout in the gym.  Otherwise, I am a healthy 53-year-old male, with no medical problems and  not on any medications.  I have been treated with antibiotic a couple times a year for the past few years for sinus infections. I would say I have a fairly stressful job and family life.

Since the problem started after taking an antibiotic, I would say that you need a Probiotic, like culturelle or align. They say that a lot of the good bacteria in your intestinal tract are destroyed by antibiotics and you should follow up with a probiotic or even eat yogurt, activia is really good for this. It will put the natual balance back in your intestinal tract. I just went through this myself and it happens to be a medication that caused my problems. I actually stopped the medication and the problems have subsided and now I have had to go off the probiotic too as it reversed the constipation to diarreah. You will know when it is time to get back to normal. I can't do dairy so no yogurt for me. Stress is not good either. The probiotics can be bought at Wal-Mart. Culturelle is much cheaper then Align. Good Luck!
