Accidently had my gallbladder removed. couple of questions

Yes you read correct....  I suffered for 3 months with problems and pain associated with my gallbladder.  The problem is, it was not my galbaldder giving me the problems.  I have a thyroid problem.  They discovered afterwards that they galbladder was clean as a whistle.  Here are my questions:

6 months later I still get pain in the surgery site.  Usually after a work out or doing ab work, I get sore.  Its been 6 months... why?

Does anyone get dizzyness, shaking, or feel just overall crappy sometimes?  I thought it was from my thyroid but now I am starting to think my galbladder and eating certain foods are causing this...

thank you,

bruce

when i had my thyroid tested i was told that if my TSH is normal (the level of thyroid which is very hard to balance) and I still have these problems, then its something else.  But no one has ever said what else it could be.

ah.. negative scope then well that rules out ulcer then..

MMm.. yeah maybe something food related that causes gastritis or some sort of pain/anxiety.. unless this is a colon issue/IBS since the colon overlaps that area *shrugs* tough to tell :(  I'd follow up with a gastro specialist if you haven't already.  Maybe start a food diet journal and hit the citrucel or gluten free psyllium husk and see what happens.

Ambien is a good one.. I don't like relyin' on pills to sleep but I was having severe sleep problems when I have dairy or gluten/oats so it still could be related to diet.  Sometimes those things are hidden in vitamins and supplements too..like I just had a vitamin C and I think I just got glutened myself accidentally so you gotta be careful..

anyway keep at it - something is causing it.

I had a stomache scope and it was negative.  At this point im clueless.  Maybe it is sugar, but not diabetes.  Perhaps the way sugar effects my system....  Does anyone take anything to help them sleep?  ambien etc?

sometimes ulcers can cause gastritis or inflammation of the stomach...or reflux issues so.. in the meantime probably a good idea to sleep on your right side..helps with reflux issues and pain sometimes.

Hey Bruce,

Yeah there's a decent chance you might have an ulcer...I mean it could be other things of course ...everything from IBS to some reflux of some kind...

If you reacted badly to that orange juice it could be a couple of things...

You could be fructose intolerant because I think a glass of orange juice is like 100 grams of fructose (that would make me royally sick since i'm fructose/fructan intolerant)

But I think pouring acid in your stomach probably wasn't too fun for what I think you have...an ulcer..probably around your gallbladder region (the stomach is located on your upper left/center region but drains to the right..)

On ulcers, it's weird..like if you eat a big meal you'll probably feel a little better because it'll lower your acid level in your stomach..but then your stomach will produce acid to break down the food and then you'll be in pain...usually it's a dull achy pain..comes and goes... but on empty stomach, or you're nervous or working out you're just getting the blood acid going and you'll be hurting.  Are your stools dark/black?  That's a sign of bleeding ulcer...

I dunno I'd get tested for H. pylori at the very least..that requires antibiotic treatment and the majority of ulcers come from that...or if this is an ulcer caused by poor diet/alchohol/smoking then you need a good dose of acid reducers (the prescription kind..) I think the common name is opremazole (I know I totally butchered the name of that drug...but acidphex or protonix or...purple pill...can't think of the name...will do..take 30-45 min before eating a meal..)

On the food question..it s-u-c-k-s...basically you eat nothing but rice and chicken..or turkey and pears..and then every 4 days you add one item new to your diet and then keep a journal.  Allergist tests are awesome for true allergies (the kind that let's say if you get a bee sting it can kill you and cause you to choke..) those are very accurate...

But food intolerance issues like gluten/corn/dairy/wheat/fruit/dairy/casein whatever... those tests are practically worthless..sometimes giving false negatives or positives so the allergist told me basically be sherlock holmes and trial and error keeping in mind that sometimes a reaction doesn't occur until days later..and takes days to get out of your system so you have to be very strict and careful.  But I don't think that's your problem... could be but I suspect with your symptoms you have an ulcer.  If acid reducers do not help and the blood test is negative usually you get an endoscope to go in and find out what the heck is going on in there...

Anyway good luck :S that s u x.

Wow....  I do feel worse after I drink orange juice.  It does come and go.  I cant put my finger on it....

Matt,  How do you know it was that food causing you the issues?  Did you get tested?

Yes its right where my gallbladder was.....

I feel your pain Bruce...

I was sick with constant nausea/pain/anxiety...generally feeling like crud... so they did a HIDA scan and found it was only working like 12% so I thought that was the answers to all my prayers..had it removed and yeah... it wasn't he problem :P sigh...still sick..and I was left with a $12K bill.

turns out i'm possibly celiac..fructose intolerant and dairy intolerant.  Sometimes when your body rejects something it slows down digestion in sort of a "I don't want this" and it causes issues with your whole digestive system including your gallbladder.. I'm not saying that's your problem but some of your symptoms do match that.  I know when I eat gluten I get dizzy/shaky and feel like crap...fact I can't work out if I eat gluten..

There's a bunch of things it could be though..

could be (I can't spell it but..google this..) spincter of oddi... It's a muscle disorder where the liver drains out and helps you digest food..when this goes crazy it can cause pain/nausea..sometimes pretty severe pain.  Usually happens after you eat..it happens after gallbladder surgery...something to ask your GI about...

Could be ulcer/h. pylori.. if you haven't had a blood test for that..sometimes that will happen *AFTER* an operation like you had.. do you feel better eating calcium things?  Ice cream? Or worse when you drink orange juice?  Lemonade?  Simple things to try...  Is the pain near the upper abdominal region? Same area as the gallbladder?? Right below the rib cage somewhere?  If you're smoking or drinking I'd cut that out right away and maybe try a trial of acid reducers for a few weeks.. might be a simple ulcer acting up.. what does pepto bismal do to you?

OOOOorrr...could be food intolerance like celiac.. ever been tested via blood test?  Maybe go on a trial of gluten free...take dairy out...eat nothing but rice and chicken and spinach for a bit..food intolerances are sneaky...maybe a food journal..something small like intolerance to dairy could sneak up and give you problems.

Just some ideas off the top of my head.....good luck!
