Chronic throat mucus - can acid reflux do this

Hi,
For nearly a year now, I've had massive throat mucus build up, with throat swelling.  I constantly hack up mucus every waking hour.  It's always the worst after I eat.  I also have an enlarged thyroid, the surgeon felt acid reflux was causing throat/airway swelling, reason for upper GI & endoscopy test, but they returned normal.

Sometimes I'll burp up acid, then afterwards my throat swells, and tons of mucus produces, no burning, just real sour in my throat (toxic) sensation,.  I have no idea, how my test results were normal, maybe the doctors are missing something.

But can stomach acid do this, has anyone else experience the symptoms I described.  And if yes, what was the treatments.
Thanks

I too have been experiencing throat & nasal mucus usually in the morning and especially after meals.  It's gotten so bad I can't even speak without clearing my throat a thousand times.

My Nose Ear & Throat specialist diagnosed me with reflux. Prescribed "AcipHex" one hour before breakfast which seems to work. Also advised to avoid a number of food products; tomatoes, caffeine, etc.

This definitely sounds like acid reflux, and if it happens more than twice a week, it might well be GERD or LPRD. Food allergies may also be an issue, but with everything you describe, I'd put my money on GERD and/or LPRD. (I have pretty much the same issues -- more now, actually, but they stared out almost exactly like you mention. Keep being observant: catching things early is as close to prevention as you can get with somethings.)

I recommend you go see a doctor about that, probably a Gastro. They'll probably out you on medication, probably something like Zantac, to see how you do. If you need something stronger, they'll likely put you on a PPI like Prevacid or Prilosec, and see how you do.

You may also want to try raising the head of your bed a few inches (8 or so), and avoiding clothing that's tight around the waist (especially when sitting). Finally, see about losing some weight, if that's a problem. With me, after losing weight then gaining some back, I've DEFINITELY been able to see a connection between the two.

Good luck.

GERD or bile reflux can cause this to happen. A lot of people with high reflux experience the 'mucus problem.' You might also want to see if there are any food groups that could be causing the excess mucus. Food intolerances can result in massive secretion of mucus. A common culprit is diary in any form, but there are many others. Try eliminating a food group at a time and see if that's of help.
