Colonoscopy

Hello:  I am having a routine colonoscopy next week as I turned 50 in the last year.  I have anxious tendancies when I see any physician and this procedure is creating a lot of anticipatory anxiety.  May I take a couple of Xanex BEFORE I go to the appointment?

mm.. that's a question I think for the person doing the procedure.  I'd call and ask if you can but I doubt it.. but you can try and ask. Wish I had some xanex myself honestly because i'm in the process of trying to find work WHILE sick..but that's another story..

Usually they give you versed but they came out with a new drug just recently.  It TOTALLY knocked me out flat out because i'm like you and I couldn't sleep a wink the night before...you'll conk out and the next second you know you'll be waking up and full of gas...that's about it.   Soon as they inject it into you, you're out cold..you won't remember anything...

I was stressed out nauseated before mine so I couldn't wait for the shot ...but honestly the prep is going to be the worst part of your colonoscopy, that is the rough part rushing to the batrhoom and depending on what prep stuff they give you..if they make you do tons of miralax that's much better than the soda phosphate stuff that makes me gag..but yeah the prep is the worst part..not the procedure itself.  Hope that helps with the anxiety (there's really no reason to be..but I know how hard it is dealing with anxiety myself).. good luck with your procedure!

I wouldn't do this.  They are going to sedate you when you get there, and the Xanax could cause a problem with the anesthesia.  If you truly feel the need to do this, call the doctor doing your procedure and ask.  If he allows you to, it will be in your chart and no chance of you getting over sedated.  Once you have your scope done, you are going to feel silly for being nervous, I did!  It's really a big nothing.  I thought the worst part (and friends all agree) was the prep the day before.  Just the constant running to the bathroom, so you may as well prepare to be comfortable while in there.
