Diverticulosis

I have had abdominal discomfort mainly on my left side (hip/admonin area) but occasionalLy on the right for the past 10 months.  I checked w/ my primary care physician 9 months ago.  They put me on 2 different antibiotics for about 12 weeks.  Antibiotics didn't help.  I then saw a Urologist 6 months ago and had a c-scan to check for kidney stones.  No stones, but they did notice diverticulosis on the scan.  I then had two isolated instances of bright red blood in stool, so much that it turned toilet water red.  Abdomin pain got worse.  Saw primary care physician again 5.5 months ago and diagnosed w/ diverticulitis....she placed me on antibiotics and referred me to a Gastroenterologist.  Antibiotics helped as well as low residue diet.  I then had a colonoscopy 4 months ago.  I was told my colon looked good and to get a follow up colonoscopy in 5 yrs which was reassuring.  I have changed my diet quite a bit in the past several months.  No nuts, seeds, etc.  I'm eating healthier.  Oatmeal/banana/juice every AM.  Light lunch (sandwich, soup, or salad) and dinner.  I'm lactose intolerant so I have always kept dairy to a minimum if any at all.  I have become quite regular.  However, the pain/disomfort persists daily...although never while sleeping.  No fever or chills....just ongoing discomfort in lower primarily lower left abdomin which occasionally radiates into left hip and sometimes left testicle and off and on on the right side.  IS THIS JUST SOMETHING I SHOULD EXPECT FROM DIVERTICULOSIS AND LIVE W/ IT OR COULD IT BE SOMETHING ELSE?

Hi.  Sorry you are having some many problems.  Let me tell you about me:  About 7 months ago I was diagnosed with my first ( of 6 ) attacks of diverticulitis.  They would put me on the antibiotics( cipro, flagyl, levaquin) but it would keep coming back.  I had pain in the lower left side.  Several ct scans later, my GI started talking about surgery as I had diverticulitis that was not responding.  Christmas Eve I ended up in the hospital for 5 days.  I met the greatest surgeon who convinced me that my body was telling the doctors that that section of colon needed to come out.  I was put on IV antibiotics and sent home with a PIC line ( allows you to infuse at home) and elective surgery scheduled 3 weeks later.  I am now 9 weeks post op after having approx. 7 inches of colon removed.  I am still having some pain but much better.  I wanted to let you know that I did not ever experience any bleeding, especially as you are describing.  I would suggest a follow up with a GI for a consult.  Hope this helps.

I just got out of the hospital with a GI bleed - not fun - hell week I call it but I was diagnosed with diverticulosis and IBS (which I think caused it)  I still have tenderness in my lower left quad and the the doc said it was from the diverticulosis. It's always good to get it checked though- good luck,
