Foul tasting burps

Yeah, it seems that every so often I get these foul tasting burps that make me want to gag and throw up.  Watery stools every 5 minutes or so, stomach cramps, gas, and my mouth salivates like crazy sometimes - like my body wants to expel everything out...one way or the other.  I tried linking to something bad I ate, perhaps some type of food I'm allergic to, but unable to pinpoint exactly what it is.  I know it gets triggered about 6 to 8 hours after eating some type of meat dish or eggs.  I do not eat raw or pooched eggs anymore, because of this.  Also, if I'm sleeping - it's like my body will wait till I wake and then start to expel everything out afterwards, sometimes 12 hours after eating.  I do take high blood pressure medication, work mostly graveyard shifts, and have uneven sleep patterns/times - but I also remember running home after high school and having similar symptoms several times.  It's like I have to starve myself to make this go away, which can last from 1 to 2 days normally - 3 days if it's really bad.  If I eat a regular meal too soon, it starts up all over again.  I thought it was just me, until my son got it too.  Perhaps we have sensitive stomachs.  My cholesterol is 196, triglycerides is 190, HDL is 35, LDL is 123, Chol/HDL ratio is 5.6.  I'm 38 now, 5', 11" and 260lbs.  According to medical charts I'm considered obese, even though I only look slightly overweight on the outside.  I was diagnosed with an enlarged liver, not sure what that entails.  My physician doesn't seem to know or have any idea what this could be exactly, so he referred me to a gastroenterologist - he didn't seem to know either, but did remove a benign, good-sized polyp from my large intestine.  I know my stats aren't that good, but my son got it at 1 year old - had him in the hospital for a couple of days - the Specialist said it was a virus, and I got it after that.  Perhaps, it is a virus.  Perhaps, it is a bad allergic reaction.  I don't think it's a disease.  Perhaps losing weight and lowering my cholesterol will help build a stronger immunity to this, then again maybe not.  I know people bigger than me, who eat 2 to 3 times more than I do, who do have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, who does look obese - to the extreme...and they don't get these symptoms.

OK. Had the nasty egg burps the last two days. Tried forcing myself to throw up. Read and read and read about what it could be. Saw two post of people who said to take Pepto Bismol. Most of the research I saw said that the most likely cause was Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) which is the bacteria responsible for most ulcers and many cases of stomach inflammation (chronic gastritis). Well low and behold, the active ingredient in Pepto Bismol actually kills this germ.

So I went out at 4 am and bought the MAX strength which is 525mg per tsp of the active ingredient Bismuth Subsalicyate. I took a dose and a half and it took about an hour for it to fully kick in, but it actually worked! I had one bowel movement and the gas burps slowly but surely dissipated. NOTE* As soon as I took the medicine, the burp taste changed from eggs to more neutral. Also do not let children take this drug.

Everyone's system is different, so you will find people who can eat anything and everything and not have problems. But the fact is that evidently your system is not going to allow that anymore, or at least at this time.

It sounds like you need some testing done, so you may need to 'pound' on your doc a bit or on your GI person. Start by asking why your liver is enlarged. Ask them if you're experiencing a fatty liver. And you may want to take a close look at that ratio of HDL and LDL. Your HDL - the 'good' stuff - is too low which places you in a risk category despite your cholesterol being not too terribly high.

But you've got a high BP and take meds for it, your HDL is low (and don't let the chart fool you, even if you bring it up to 40, that's still a bit low), and you really are carrying a bit too much weight. You need to place some focus on trying to change a few things around.

Make sure the doc checks you for H. pylori. And if you're throwing up food hours after eating it, make sure you're checked for slow gastric emptying and for GERD. Another possibility is gallbladder issues, so if what you're bringing up hours after eating is accompanied by a very yellowy liquid ask the doc for a gallbladder ultrasound and HIDA scan with CCK injection. You need both tests to check for gallbladder issues, not just the ultrasound.

As for your son, it's possible that both of you may have the same issues, but he needs to be evaluated by a good pediatrician well-versed in GI problems in the young. Don't assume you both have the same thing just because some or all of the symptoms seem very similar. A number of GI issues have very similar symptoms and that can make it very difficult to come up with a diagnosis until testing is done.

In the meantime, you may want to follow a low-fat GERD diet to see if that's of help in helping to calm you GI tract down a bit. Some representative examples of diets can be found at the gicare.com website.
