Gastritis and in need of help

What can I do about my gastritis?  I have had gastritis for two years.  Since the end of last year I haven,t been doing very well with it.  It keeps flaring up a lot and it is agony.  Im on Pantoprazole which is one 40mg tablet a day.  I also take Gaviscon.  Today I started taking Sucralfate but it hasn,t helped as its extremly painful.  It keeps me awake at night with the pain.  Has anyone else been like this?  I don,t know why I can,t get rid of it or get it under control.  Ive had an endoscopy and the biopsies didn,t show a cause of it but I have had my gallbladder out.  Please help if you have any ideas.  Also it eased off for about a week 3 or 4 weeks ago and I thought it was going, now its back with more pain.  I just want to cry as its so painful.  I could take 2 Pantoprazoles a day but it would interfere with taking the Sucralfate or Gaviscon.  I take Gaviscon at night.  I really need it to go and to eat properly again.  Has anyone else had it for ages then it has gone? Im hoping it will heal and I can get back to normal. Thanks

I was tested and found to malabsorp to rather a high degree. I had endured a nasty case of gastritis that led a B12 deficiency that I suffered like hell from for eight long years. I had gone from doctor to doctor literally begging them to find the source of my debilitating fatigue. Yet, doctor after doctor had simply brushed me off and some even suggested that I might “need someone to talk with”. I was only 25 years old and had lost 40 lbs and looked and felt so very terrible and knew I was going to lose my life if I soon didn’t receive help. Thankfully, one very fine doctor had simply taken one mere look at my deteriorated state (I hadn’t even had the chance to sit down in his office chair) and he said “you have a B12 deficiency” and indeed tests confirmed such and also that my kidneys and heart were beginning to fail.  I was administered B12 shots and made a moderate recover, though still felt very unwell and later it was found that my adrenal glands had been badly damaged from the prolonged illness. Rather high doses of Prednisone were used to bring my cortisol levels up to normal and this had dramatically assisted my wellbeing. Over the period of twenty years, these glands have improved to the point that I was able to very slowly wean myself off of the Prednisone.

I continue to have a very bad case of reflux and for 25 years have required meds to control that. Recently, I had been switched over to Tecta 40 mg and soon had noticed that something just wasn’t right. I developed a very blank state with literally no impulse whatsoever to blink and an empty feeling that left me not wanting to socialize. I’m usually a very upbeat kind of guy, the type that is always joking and humming a song, but instead I was void inside and retreated from nearly everyone. Then, I had been very busy with other things had forgotten to take the Tecta for two days and it was like a switch had been flipped back on and I could feel myself returning to my normal happy self, but then of course the damned heart burn returned with a vengeance and I had needed to resume talking Tecta and sure enough the symptoms returned. I have always tested low for magnesium, zinc, copper and B12 among other things and I know these meds are the cause and I want to pursue the possibility of one of the newer rather non-invasive surgeries that might alleviate the heart burn and need for meds. Unfortunately, from what I’ve been reading, I’m not a good candidate due to certain conditions of my esophagus, so soon after having further tests done, I intend to bump up my vitamin and mineral supplements.

Any sort of virus can make you feel really worn out and exhausted.

To check for the most basic mineral deficiencies, the doctor can run blood tests for vitamin D, vitamin B12, magnesium, and a chem-7 (also called a BMP or basic metabolic panel) which has many things in it.

Yep, I really wish I could figure out a way to get my magnesium up without needing daily IV magnesium.  I've started trying some alternative therapies like magnesium oil rubbed into my skin everyday and hopefully that will start working.

Thats awful poor you being low in Magnesium and having IV Magnesium daily.  Ive started to feel really tired and tense I don,t know if Im suffering any mineral deficiences now.  I do have a bad chest at the moment though, maybe thats wearing me out.

I completely understand.  I have chronically low magnesium even though I am taking lots of magnesium gluconate and IV magnesium everyday, and there was some thought that the PPI that I am on for GERD could be lowering my magnesium so I tried to go off of it, but I couldn't do it even though I was taking an H2 blocker and tapering very slowly.

Yes I wish I could come off the PPIs and go on the H2 blockers which may be better, though they are still drugs.  I still get a lot of pain even on the two PPIs.  Oh to get well and not need any drugs.  I don,t believe that drugs are good for the body in a lot of ways because of side effects etc.  Thanks for your help.

Ranitidine and Cimetedine are both H2 blockers which can help when going off of PPI's.  However Pantoprazole is also a PPI.

Thanks,I am very wary of coming off the PPIs as Ive done it before and did get the rebound.  The doctor tried me on Ranitidine instead but it made me sick and hes tried me on Cimetedine but acid still came up.  Now Im on 2 Pantoprazoles, for the time being.

Yes, this could be related to something you ate.  Also be careful about going off of PPI's quickly as this can cause a lot of rebound reflux/heartburn.

Hi no I don,t know why I have gastritis but I did have my gallbladder out.  I can,t drink alcohol and I don,t smoke.  I had some muscular pain in my ribs about two and a half years ago.  I took anti-inflammatory drugs and got a stomach ulcer.  It was discovered shortly afterwards that I had gallstones.  Then I started getting a lot of pain with the gallstones.  I had the gallbladder out.  It was all fine for two to three weeks so I stopped taking the PPI.  I had a massive acid rebound and lots of chest pain.  I had osophaghitis, what I have now stems from then.  The latest endoscopy showed gastritis and a small hiatus hernia.  Ive suffered since with gastritis flare ups, they are a lot worse than when I first got it.  The biopsies don,t show the reason that I have it so its all a right nightmare.  It hurts really bad this flare up.  Maybe Ive eaten something or its the coffee I drank so I will have to be careful with my diet.  Its been bad again for over two days now.
