Hida scan

I am 43 year old female with bad pain on right side under my ribs, alot of burping!!!!  I have been scheduled for a HIDA scan on Nov. 12th.  I am very nervous about everything but the thought of radioactive meds. injected into my body really bothers me.  I have tried to find info but it's not very helpful. If anyone has been through this can yu tell me if there were any side affects to the radiation?  Alos my mother has Graves diesease so I am concerned this could hurt my thyroid.  (just info on test I have had incase it has any bearing on the Hida scan--- I have just been through a colonoscopy and endoscope and I have gastritis.)

:( Steph

Thank you for taking the time to give me info on personal experience and for reassurance.  I feel a little better.

Ditto what UK said.  The amount of radiation is very small and localized, and there are no side effects to the test.  Honestly, it's really very boring.  I don't remember feeling enclosed, at least not like an MRI.

One thing you want to be sure to tell the techie is if you feel at all nauseated when they give you an injection that makes the gallbladder contract.  That's when they measure how much bile the gb expels and they can measure how effective your gb is operating.

I had a HIDA scan a few weeks ago and there were no side effects, its not much fun if you don't like enclosed spaces, but all you do is lie there so not so bad raelly.
