How do I make this decision re: colon resection?

Hi, I have recurring endometrial cancer for which I have had seven radiation treatments after having had surgery to remove the abdominal nodes where the cancer recurred.  I also have a history of diverticulitis which has been recurrent, but which responds well to antibiotics.  I think the radiation must have already exacerbated the colon and the diverticulitis seems to be back.  My question is -- do I discontinue the radiation and hope the cancer doesn't recur.  Do I have a colon resection and hope it is successful and then resume the radiation.   How will doctors determine if the radiation has already caused weakening of the colon to the point that I have to have the surgery?  I realize some of these decisions will have to be made by me and no one else, but how do I evaluate the alternatives?  Thank you.

Hi - I don't profess to be able to advise you what treatment might be appropriate for you but, in your evaluation, if you wish to factor in to your decision a prediction as to what a total colectomy might "feel like" - then I can share my own experience with you.  Please log on to:-

I would suggest you consult with your doc to see if the diverticulitis is actually the problem at this point. In some cases, radiation can irritate the colon directly and that may be the cause of what you're experiencing. If that is what is going on, different steps may need to be taken. Find out the cause of the problem first, before you starting thinking 'what if.'
