Hubby can't keep weight on

Hello,

My husband (age 68) has heart surgery in March 2012, then had a TIA and wasn't able to swallow any food or water. The surgeon put in a trachea and a J tube in him (could not put G tube in because colon is in front of stomach) and he had this in him for two months. After the tube was removed, of coarse he was bound to lose weight from being on a liquid diet for 2 months. He had the trachea removed and the J tube removed in June 2012 and gradually continued to lose weight. Now he is over 1 year post op and is now 15 pounds under weight. Before surgery he was 5' 3, 212 pounds and now 130 pounds. He eats 3 small meals a day, be can't seem to gain weight. His memory is getting poor also. Any idea as to why this is happening? Thank you for your time.

Thank you, Dr. Sharma. My husband has a appointment with a Gastroenterologist on Monday and we hope that the Doctor can find out why he keeps losing weight. He's already had several blood workups and many tests and they have found nothing. So, hopefully, we'll get some more blood tests and other tests to see what is causing him to lose weight and not gain since last year's heart surgery. Take care and thank you very much for your time. I will let you know how it turns out.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
A clinical examination and work up is extremely important for correct diagnosis and management of his condition.Depression, anemia, mineral and vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, dementia, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, cancers, malignancies all can cause loss of appetite and loss of memory. It is suggested to consult a physician and get clinically evaluated. He may further refer you to the concerned specialist. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Keep me posted.
Best luck and regards!
