Another with fecal body odour and I don't know why??

I've been smelling like poop for years now, I don't know, perhaps almost 10 years.
I quit almost everything wrong. I quit smoking, I quit drinking, drugs, and stimulants like caffeine, theine (almost no sugar). I do exercise everyday, I almost only drink water. I eat almost no red meat... I'm a really healthy person. Also my personal hygiene is very strict.
Still, I smell like ****, not everytime, apparently, not for everyone, but this has made my life not really ease. I've seen a couple of doctors and told them my problem.
Both of them in those moments, told me, that they didn't smell anything. The first one told me "Each one smells different and must be accepted" the second one sent me to a psychiatrist claiming I had agoraphobia and a paranoia because of my fecal body odour. (Of course is difficult go outside when it's going to be a tough day because of the reaction of people to my body odor, besides I've lived and worked in two other countries and now I'm going abroad for some months because work).
Anyway, I have done some analysis, candidiasis, hyper or hypothyroidism, internal hemorrhoids and Gilbert syndrome are discarded. IBS and TMAU are not discarded yet. I don't have any symptons of rectal prolapse, anal fissures, halitosis... and I'm constipated or I suffer diarrhea like everybody else, neither always nor never.
I can't forget that everytime I hear comments of how bad I smell, my anus is wet, like sweating, and also my underwear. Everything is clean, promise you, but is wet, I don't smell anything, but people surrounding me, yes, wherever I am.
Lately I've been thinking it could be IBS, because I read is like the colon is connected to the brain, and because of stress or anxiety or how I feel, could not work as it's supposed to, and also I read that one of its functions is removing the water from the feces. And I've been thinking that, for this reason, is why some days, and everyday when I have something important to do, I feel the anxiety, and my anus is wet, when no other part of my body is wet, even my armpits are dry, or never as wet as my anus.
And also because, when I took xanax (alprazolam) for the insufferable anxiety caused by this problem, my anus was almost always dry, even in some difficult moments, and I never hear any kind of comments regarding to my body odour (But the doctors cut me the medication).
For all of this I've started to think that can be IBS, and for this reason, a couple of days ago, I've started to take yobalex (probiotics + prebiotics). Perhaps my intestinal flora has been damaged some years ago, and like I've done nothing really specific to repair it, that's why I've been suffering the problem all these years. But I still don't know.
This is my problem, and my question is. After everything I've described, and for sure knowing that my fecal body odour is real, and it seems always I smell when my anus is wet, Could be this smell and/or sweat in my anus has been caused by a malfunction of my colon or by an insufficient intestinal floral of my colon???

The problem is gone. Everything is explained in this post. Absolutely everything. I guess the main reason should have been the internal piles/hemorrhoids. After the surgical procedure of "Doppler Guided Hemorrhoid Artery Ligation" all is gone. I've never felt the pressure again, people complaints or sweat in the area (although the sweat it was controlled before the procedure).
This is my last post. I only want to forget the problem unless someone send me a message, but I can't explain more. Everything happened to me is explained here and the solution (for me) also.

I used also some time ago, ketoconazole, but it didn't work. Not in my anus, but it worked pretty well, and still is working on my head (because of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis in the area) twice a week, every week. Also it worked in one of my foot's toe (fungus in the nail). Of course I recommend ketoconazole, because it works against fungus, yeast and bacterial problem, is really cheap (here in Spain 3 euros 100 ml bottle) and it doesn't work, you can discard almost any fungus, yeast or bactial problem I guess (I don't really have read a lot about ketoconazole and I don't think I'm going to read anything more about any health problem from now).

I keep telling my story. A month after the colonoscopy (without local anesthesia), the surgeon from the Spanish National Healthcare System, told me that I had Grade II internal hemorrhoids, and he thought it wasn't enough to have surgery (I expected that). He didn't give me another option, it was like: "live with them for the rest of your live". So, I asked him, why the sweating of the area. He told me, could be a neuro-vegetative problem, and send me to the dermatologist.
So the week after this happened I went to visit the dermatologist, besides before that, I booked an appoinment at a private clinic (I knew the national public healthcare system wouldn't do anything to help me).
The dermatologist didn't have time, because she has a surgical procedure booked at that time. She told me, after checking me 15 seconds, it was hyperhidrosis, and only gave me an antiperspirant cream. She told me, I could stop the sweating, injecting botulinum toxin (botox) in the sweat glands of the perianal area. And nothing more.
I didn't mind, previously I've booked an appoinment at the private clinic. Anyway I used that cream, and it worked better than I could have expected. So I bought the soap and more cream (the dermatologist only gave me medical samples). And worked as hell. Cleaning the zone with the soap, and after that, apply the cream, works really well. The zone is completely dry for hours, besides if you are an active person. I couldn't have expected after all the money I spent on different creams. The soap and cream is called "Spirial" from SVR Laboratories and the website is (http://en.labo-svr.com/products/spirial-creme/). I wish I could have found this cream some years ago, but it's the way it is.
So, anyway, finally with the perianal zone completely dry even I walked for more than an hour. I went to the appointment to the private clinic. And I told the surgeon again my problem. He didn't tell me, but I know he didn't believe what I told him about my BFO (or body fecal odour) I saw it in his face.
Anyway, he checked the zone, and told me it was dry. I told him, I was using the antiperspirant cream, and it seemed it was working. He told me also, he didn't smell anything wrong. And I told him, that after I changed all my diet, complaints about my bad smell had diminished to almost nothing. But still I was feeling the pressure at the zone, and probably it was this, the cause plus the excessive sweatness of the area, what caused my fecal smell.
OK, he explained me, that I had grade II internal hemorrhoids, and as I relate the pressure in the area with my fecal body odor, subconsciously, my neuro-vegetative system, as a defense, normally produced hyperhidrosis on the perianal area.
OMG the best explanation ever from a medical professional about my problem!!!!
It explains, perhaps, while with friends and family the zone was always dry, and why in an "hostile" environment the zone sweated a lot (for some years). I must say, the private clinic is, www.centropoliclinicoeuropeo.com and the surgeon is Dr. Federico Sanchez (if you live in Spain).
So, the surgeon recommended me, always ignoring the issue of bad smell (because I know he doesn't belive me, or he thinks it is in my head, literally speaking), the procedure called DGHAL or "Doppler Guided Hemorrhoid Artery Ligation". He considered the surgical procedure it was too much for a II grade internal hemorrhoids, and this was the best for me. I accepted for a total amount of 750 euros (only this year I spent more in probiotics, caprilic acid, riboflavin, activated carbon, digestive enzimes, creams with a low ph...) in 3 sessions.
Well, I must say that after only the first one (of three) I feel the zone completely different, and the pressure is totally different after the W.C. (you know what I mean).
I can't believe it, after years of this social nightmare, this year I improved a lot after I changed my diet (I still believe I had candidiasis for quite some time), and in the space time of two weeks, I found a cream that definitely works 100% (the cream is about 10 euros for 50 ml and the soap is 7 euros per unit), and a procedure who's erasing the damn internal hemorrhoids.
Of course my confidence in the Spanish NHS is 0. In the future, I won't forget this if I have another health problem. It's a shame health problem cases like mine. In the future if I still live in Spain, and I have cancer and I can't afford a private clinic, I know I'm dead.

Yesterday I forgot a couple of things (I knew it). I've also tried pantyliners (didn't work), even for 3-4 weeks I tried to "close" my anus with duct tape (didn't work) but with this last stupidity I checked that the sweat in the zone could happened from inside my body. Also I've tried female antibiotics against the candida, it seems there weren't any "male" antibiotics (didn't work at all)

Also I tried sodium bicarbonate plus water in the zone, because of its antifungal properties (I don't know if it worked). Also some coconut oil, because the same (I don't know if it worked). I also tried shaving the zone (didn't work). Having 3-4 showers a day (didn't work). And cleaning the area too much, is the worst you can do if you have hemorrhoids, itching... You think about it, you name it... I've already tried it.

And if people try probiotics, is better (and cheaper) the goat milk kefir or natural yoghurt (without sugar) than something like yobalex or any "artificial" probiotics. Also nowadays I was myself only with glycerin soaps. And I drink a lot of carbonated water (because I like it and it's supposed to fight against fungus...).

And I guess, that's it. The worst part of all, is the diet. But life is about routine, and now I'm used to it. Nowadays I don't eat bread, potatoes, alcohol, sugar or any kind of sweeteners (except stevia and xylitol)... but this week I ate some chocolate one day, and nothing bad happened. And everyday I drink 4-5 coffees/espressos (with some stevia and some milk without lactose) without any consequence.

After some months, I guess, my diet could be a less strict, but I'm still afraid that the worst symptoms could go back.

(Last Update)

After waiting more than 6 months, finally I had a colonoscopy 3 weeks ago. The results, I have a chronic anal fissure and internal hemorrhoids, also it seems that I suffered external hemorrhoids for quite some time.

I haven't updated this post for sometime because I've been working on a vessel for some months. Of course, I want a surgical procedure to remove at least the internal hemorrhoids, now I can afford it.

But the symptoms have decreased a lot these months. First at all, because of my symptoms, in April-May, I thought I might be suffering candidiasis in my guts, so again I tried, a new option, in this case a diet, without no sugar, yeast... a Candida diet, plus more or less an "Internal Bowel Syndrome Diet" no nuts, gluten, no lactose...

The first month, was really difficult, I lost some pounds, around 20-25, because even I didn't eat fruit (because of the fructose) or dairy products (because of the lactose) and I was working at sea on a vessel. Also I took caprilic acid pills because of a possible candidiasis infection on my guts.

Also I tried probiotics (yobalex by Bayer, didn't work), Riboflavin (100 mg a day, didn't work), chlorophyll capsules (as internal deodorant, didn't work at all), activated carbon (also as internal deodorant, didn't work), body cream with a low ph (5,5 didn't work at all), digestive enzymes (didn't work) and I don't know what more I tried.

I found out (don't ask how),when after a colitis, I had an insufferable pain in the zone, it was only because the anal fissure, so the "Rectogesic" ointment helped me a lot.

Also sometimes helped me a lot benzodiazepines, as diazepam (valium) and alprazolam (xanax), with the pressure in that zone. because they act also as a "muscle relaxants" (now I know the pressure is caused by the internal hemorrhoids, but not at that time).

Well, now after some months on a strict diet, my symptoms have decreased quite a lot, but because of the internal hemorrhoids, I guess, still the problematic zone can "sweat" sometimes because of the pressure of the hemorrhoids. But an hemorrhoidal cream (with benzocaine) helps me quite a lot.

I've been dealing with this problem for quite some time. I tried everything. Last december a doctor sent me to the psychiatrist because after a rectal exploration told me that my anus was in perfect condition and everything was on my mind. I was diagnosed by this doctor with agoraphobia (when I've lived in 3 different Countries in my life) and a paranoia with a bad smell (when I never smelled anything).

Also I thought over the time I suffered hipo or hyperthyroidism, gilbert syndrome, trimethylaminuria (TMAU)... and now I could assure it was a Candidiasis (or a yeast infection) - hemorrhoids combination.

High pressure in the zone, the heat increases in the area, the zone sweats a lot, plus I have an anal fissure in my anus and a yeast problem in my colon... these factors cause the terrible smell.

I think that because the combination of these factors, some time ago I tried the same hemorrhoid cream I'm using now, and didn't work. While now it helps me a lot.

Why I thought I could suffer Candidiasis?? Because after eating one single day a ton of sugar (some cupcakes), or some beers or a pizza (made with natural yeast). The next day at the W.C. was not a pleasant day, and after the W.C. even worst.

I tried the home remedy to check if I could suffer from candidiasis. The first thing in the morning you have to do, after wake up, spit on a glass of water (if after some minutes, there are some filaments on the water, is possible you can suffer from Candidiasis). That's why I tried the candida diet. I have to say, the first days of the diet, were at least not easy.

As I was explaining, after some months on a strict diet, nowadays I don't have any kind of problem "on the toilet", nor colitis, neither constipation.

Also I thought I could suffer candidiasis or a yeast infection, because the bad odour in our body is caused by bacteria, yeast... That's why the areas of our (external) body with worst odour, are the ones with more bacteria, our armpits and feet. Or that's why the injuries with puss and the teeth with tartar smells so bad, always because the bacteria.

And I also have to say the next, in my despair, I also tried once a day for a week, a teaspoon filled with sugar plus some drops of tupertine to get rid of the candida. I don't know if it worked, and I don't recommend to anyone.

Besides now I can assure after the colonoscopy, that my colon is in perfect condition.

Now I feel really better, more or less, I can control it, and what's more important, I know what causes or caused the bad smell. But of course, I want to remove the hemorrhoids (I hope before the year ends).
But promise you all, through the years, it hasn't been easy dealing with this problem and with the people complaining about my bad smell.

I read about people who has been suffering this problem for more than 30 years, other people who write on other forums, about "thinking of commit suicide" because of this problem. And all because certain (sub)people who complain about their bad smell and a lot of (quasi) M.D. who tells them that everything is on their mind. And these breaks my heart.

Of course I'm forgetting something here, but what I wrote here, could help other people, or could be a path for someone else to find out what is causing their body odour problem. Because I tried every single option I could until I found out what was happening with my body.

I know this post is a few months old, so you may already have been diagnosed and treated by now... lol.  I hope so because what you're dealing with must be agony!  I'm sorry that this is happening to all of you.  I'm studying to be a doctor and just wanted to say a few things.

One, if you're still experiencing this problem, try patting some cornstarch powder on your anus.  It will ease the itching without adding moisture, like creams or ointments do.  And actually, it will absorb any excess moisture and help with any bad smell.

Second, I'm not familiar with TMAU, so it may be the same thing I'm about to mention.  But there is a condition... I don't know what it's called, of course, and it's rare I think... but it's where your body doesn't make a certain enzyme or something that is necessary to break down waste or something, and it causes patients that have this condition to have a very strong, unpleasant odor, despite excellent hygiene.  I'm sorry I don't have more details but I just wanted to let you know there IS a condition that causes this and that you're not alone.  It starts with an "H".  I'm gonna do some research to get more info and I'll share what I find out if you like... and if you still don't have a diagnosis.

Third... I've found some doctors (too many) can really suck at their job and cannot stand to admit they don't have an answer, so they try to cover it up by blaming the patient... saying it's all in their heads.  I despise doctors like that... they don't realize and don't care that treating the physical issues a patient has is NOT where their responsibility ends.  They should treat the whole person... body AND mind... and that includes putting the patient's mind at ease by not adding to their misery by blowing them off, dismissing their concerns, and the worst sin... blaming the patient and indicating that it's just your imagination.  Just because the doctor does not have an answer does not mean there isn't one.  You are totally right about it being necessary to fight for your health and be your own advocate.  If you're not getting what you need from your doctor, find another one.  Even if you have to change doctors a few times in order to find one that will truly listen to you with compassion, take your concerns seriously work WITH you to find the answer (one that doesn't include blaming you for imagining things), and can admit when he/she doesn't know the answer but is willing to find out... even if they have to consult another doctor!

You all are very brave to share your stories on here to help others, which as you can see, you're already accomplishing!

Hello, I am 1 19 year old male suffering from these similar conditions. This might be aa form of yeast infection, my doctor prescribed me a ketoconazole cream for me to use around my anus. However something i found out is that this cream or any cream alone can not stop this problem, my symptoms also have very ibs like symptoms with them, bloating, watery stool, occasional stomach pain. After doing hours and hours of research, I found out that if someone has external "yeast" infection, then most likely it is also intestinal as well, because of this you must use the antibacterial cream along with a probiotic/antibiotic treatment for your intestines. Modern MD's I have talked to know very little about this problem. The anxiety and "odor" are killing my confidence, I used to be a very outgoing, gregarious individual, but for the last year or so I have been forced into the confines of close friends, family and comfort. Hope my post helps someone, I will be trying this treatment and If I don't forget I will update results in a few months.

I am a 40 yr old male and I too have read and nodded my head with each and every post as I can fully empathise with you all, I have suffered these symptoms and the social embarrassment and the constant feeling of being talked about behind your back by so called friends! However for the last 2 weeks I have been completely odour free after a particularly bad few days of really smelling bad! I went out and brought an anti bacterial medicated all singing all dancing talc powder from the pharmacy, I shower dry off and rub a handful over my anus and up my butt crack and even my genitals!!! It really is working for me it does not work with normal talc get the most potent anti everything talc you can get and guess what I tried doing without it after a shower and nearly got through the day before I thought I could smell the bad odour again so back on with the talc and it went.... This tells me that we are suffering from a bacteria around our butts which sweat triggers off,  it may not be the cure but it is a relief which I can live with and hopefully make people who know me forget that I once stank of poo!!!!

I've read all your paragraphs and don't worry...I am suffering the EXACT same problems and symptoms as you! I've had it for several years now. Are you male or female? I contracted some weird skin problem in my younger years of high school around the groin area, I remember vaguely that it started when one day in gym I forgot my shorts, so I made the silly mistake of borrowing a pair from lost property...BAD IDEA. And ever since, my testicle sack and everywhere else in the groin area has been very red and almost greasy. I can't tell you the amount of doctors I've gone to see about it, to try and get rid of it, and they've all been no help and have just prescribed me different creams or sprays that have made no difference whatsoever, so I've basically just given up. Anyways, before I contracted this skin problem, I did notice occasionally the problem of fecal odour, it wasn't as bad, and I never smelt it personally but it was the odd comment from people around me (you'll know what I'm talking about). But ever since I contracted this skin problem, I personally feel that it's gotten 10x worse. I have immaculate personal hygiene, brush my teeth everyday, shower every morning. When I get out of the shower, I feel nice, clean and fresh - I apply deodorant, but when I go outside or somewhere to do something, I then feel grubby and gross and that's when I feel that the odour begins. I read somewhere that you feel a weird tingling sensation around the anus area? I feel the exact same problem as well. I will be doing something and it suddenly begins and its uncomfortable and awkward, and mentally that's always when I think the odour is coming out of my body. I will build up the courage someday to go and speak to a doctor about it, I believe that it could be a problem in my digestive system, for my age (17) I should be big and tall, but I look malnourished, and people have even asked if I have an eating disorder, but some people just say I have a fast metabolism and that it'll catch up with me later in life - but I don't think its normal, and it may be the cause of it, I eat what most teenagers would eat, and okay...its not healthy, but they're all conscious about gaining weight, when I've never had that problem? And I'm not sporty, nor do I exercise ever - Its just really weird. I've spoken to close family about it, and they say that it's all in my head and that I'm just paranoid as well, but I do genuinely believe I stink, despite the fact that I've never smelt it. I definitely know that its me as I always hear people around me passing comments about a feces odour. It's so frustrating, as I don't want to come across to people as a disgusting unhygienic person and its knocked my confidence quite a bit as I feel people don't want to be around me anymore. It would just be great if you could share some advice on how to slow it down and eventually stop it, and if you could share some help on what I should do, as I've done so much research on it and it all just baffles me. Thank you so much!

I writing this, perhaps someday could help someone like me. After being sent to a psychiatrist by the MD who I told my problem. I kept searching. I found a rectal ointment for chronic anal fissures, and I tried it. It worked, finally something worked. I read something more, and you know what. I did what I have to do. In front of the mirror I tried to find if I had an anal fissure (don't ask). I found it into the rectum, and I took a picture. I went again to a MD, and after all, now I have an appointment with the surgeon to remove it. It's a shame, after almost 10 years, after visiting 2 MD, after being send to a psychiatrist because "everything was on my mind", it was me, and only me, who had to find out what the problem really was. My situation all this time is a shame for the medical profession. So, my advice to you, is "Keep On", you know there's something wrong, and you're not crazy. No matter what other people say, or your family or a MD. You know you have a problem, and try to solve. I hope this message help someone to solve his/her problem without waiting 10 years, like it has happened to me.

I forgot something. This problem caused me some psychological problems, like social anxiety disorder or social phobia, and perhaps, sometimes agoraphobia. I know that alprazolam or Xanax, helps a lot, is a fact. When I take those tablets, there is no sweat in that part of the body. Contrary to that I thought are not my social problems what causes my FBO, is my FBO what causes my social problems. And Xanax worked for me, because I feel relaxed and I relax my sphincter muscles (without knowing this). I don't know I've just read about diciclomine (to relax my anal muscles) and electro-stimulation of that zone, biofeedback.... but I still need time. But I'm pretty sure that the friction of my buttlocks while I'm walking plus my tight anal muscles, is what cause that sweat, or when I'm in a bad mood.... And that's why when you're relaxed at home, and/or with your friends and/or couple, that part of your body is dry. Is because you feel relaxed, and unconsciously you are relaxing that zone, and nobody smells you anything. And when you feel there's gonna be a BO problem, it happens.

OK, this is being like my personal diary of this problem. And I think I found the root of the problem... again, I hope this time is the right one. Well I tried a lot, and nothing helps. I think I don't have TMAU. I've never had halitosis and I never had another disgusting body odour than my FBO (that's the worst kind of odour you can have) and there's no a TMAU test in my crap Country, Spain, where MD are almost illliterate (at least with this problem, in my case). Always happens to me, when my *** sweats. Nor my close friends neither my family smells anything, but is like everybody else does. It happened to me in different countries, places, situations. Is not an hygienic problem, and is like nothing works. Last week I found out I had an anal fissure (a little one, like a skin fold). I know, or I think I know, that if my anus sweats, I'm sold!!! and I think that if a have to take a long walk is gonna be worse, and with a hot weather, a nightmare. Now I think I know why this is happening, and at least, this could be a valid explanation. In my case, I think is not a TMAU problem, not an hygienic problem, not incontinence, not mucus, not a yellow liquid from my anus, not nothing, except sweat from my anus, and no other odour from my body. Everything is caused by my anal muscles, that's why nothing works and not everytime my BO is disgusting, and not for everybody. Of course the root of the problem is an anal fissure (like pregnant women can have after giving birth), chronic or not, caused by a bowel inflammation, chronic, or that has happened for a long time. Of course diet helps, or must help. Constipation can provoke an anal fissure, but also a "difficult" diarrhea. Laxatives are not the answer, nullo is not the answer, nor chlorophyll, nor deodorant... There are two options, botox in your anal muscles, or surgery. I have an appoinment with a proctologist in June, and during this time I'm gonna try exercises to relax my anal channel and/or muscles (I don't have any other option).  If you have my same symptoms, check it out, if after a long walk in a sunny day, basides having your anus wet, you feel like a heavy sensation in that part of your body, or like is at hundred degrees celsius. If this happens to you, the problem is your anal muscles (the opposite of incontinence).

Everything was OK until this week. Again I heard comments. I'm gonna find a new MD, because last Sunday was a tough day in the bathroom, and I've been feeling my anus itching and stinging, all week. And has been this week when I heard comments again. So I've been reading a little more, I've watched pictures, and I have an "anal fissure", and I think is chronic. I don't have it everyday of my life, but sometimes I feel that unpleasant feeling in my anus from years now (besides a diet and probiotics works ok. I haven't had any constipation these days). I've been reading a little more and perhaps everything is caused by a "narrowing of the anal canal" or whatever is called in English. That's why I'm going to visit a new doctor, an especialist and I hope the gest... again.

Thank you for your advice. Promise you, I've been reading a little more, as like you say, there are people with my symptoms who tested positive for TMAU. From years I don't have any kind of relationship with my father, but I remember that he smelled really strong, not in the morning, but always in the afternoon, neither fish nor fecal, but was a really really strong smell. Like TMAU is a genetical disorder, I'm thinking about getting tested. In a few days I will go to the sea for 4-5 months, I'm a motorman in a vessel, but when I come back, I'm going to do the test for TMAU for sure. I can be tested positive, and I could find what's going on with my body, or I can be tested negative, and I could discard another option. A win-win situation, we can say.

PS... So what if you have agoraphobia or a paranoia. You are reacting to other people's reaction when they notice your problem, and to me, that reaction (on your part) is a natural reaction. I would be afraid of smelling like poop and being embarassed, or paranoid that it may happen at any time... I get it. I would feel the exact same way. It would be different if there was no odor, if it was all in your mind, but it isn't. Anal moisture is proof that it isn't just in your head... Just becuase the doc couldn't smell anything at that time, doesn't mean it never happens. He shouldn't try to turn it into a mental issue.

I really wish you all the best..
