Never Ending Noisy Stomach

Hello,

I have a problem with my bowls / stomach / abdomen, which causes an unpleasant amount of discomfort and noise. The problem started 3 years ago during my study of A levels, I cannot recall an obvious trigger to this problem, but has become increasingly worse over the 3 years. It affects me so much that the embarrassment from the noises and discomfort have reduced my social life to literately nothing, and will soon cause me to drop out of University.

I Enjoy university ALOT and do not wish to leave anytime soon, especially for the reason that "my stomach rumbles and squelches". I have researched alot into this subject and tried many different techniques and medications to calm my problem, and also seen many doctors, all of which have had no effect on my problem.

I can only describe the problems i get so well, there are three major types of noise and discomfort i feel, the first is the feel of hunger, a build up of gas in my stomach. I feel incredibly bloated and my stomach seems to rumble, feeling and sounding like hunger. This can happen just after eating, but mainly 2-3 hours after eating.

The second type i get happens further down and usually takes place after i wake up and have breakfast. I usually eat cerals for breakfast, it sounds like a wet squelching noise just above my hips and feels like my muscles are "vibrating" as i feel liquid pass through, this is incredibly noisy and uncomfortable. I usually attempt to wake up 2 hours before i have to be some where to eat my breakfast so i can be on my own when this "phase" of the day happens, but this very rarely solves my problem, and often leads to me getting hungry fast before my lecture is over, resulting in the problem above.

The third type of sound and discomfort i get is most likely the worst as im yet to find anything to cause or affect it. The feeling is almost like i am passing wind, but in my lower back, after this happens i do not feel like i need to pass wind from my bottom. This continues to happen multiple times every 5 minuets or so for sometimes 2 hours, this makes ALOT of noise.

From those three different types of wind or noise i get i hope you can relate to this and maybe help recommend the next step for me to solve this problem. On top of the three major problems i have is a constant feel of gas passing from my stomach through my bowels, this is noisy, constant, uncomfortable and feels unavoidable. It sometimes feels like the left side of my abdomen inflates with air like a bubble.

Any help is very much appreciated, sorry for the read

My first thought is you've changed your diet overnight and now your intestines are shifting gears.  So when you get up in the morning and eat, it stimulates your intestines to start moving (peristalsis).  Since you've changed your diet, your intestines might have slowed down (it should be temporary) and you're experiencing the effects of that. Basically, the food is going in but there's gonna be a slight traffic jam for a while until your body adjusts to the diet. Give the diet time (several weeks) and see what problems have resolved and which ones haven't.   If constipation becomes a problem, get some metamucil (fiber) and take at nighttime.  This should keep things flushing through.  Make sure if  you take the fiber to drink plenty of water with it - or else that can constipate you also.  Some people also use magnesium oxide (in the supplement section of stores) to help them go to the bathroom.  This form of magnesium is not that well absorbed and ends up passing through the intestines.  Magnesium stimulates intestines to move.  Hope this helps todays problems!!!!  Keep trying!  And like I said, I'll give you recipes if you find that this diet really helps you.

Woke up this morning and had my omelet again! and my stomach is going crazy, doesn't feel like alot of gas though, just rumbles and discomfort (sort of like vibrations). Did you ever get this? Is there anything that could affect this, such as time of the day that i eat, or the amount i have to drink / eat in morings?

Thanks

Your "noisemakers" should lessen each day.  Another thing I wanted to warn you about....sometimes after going gluten free, you might have some bouts of diarrhea - I believe it is "yeast die-off" - the little yeast is not being fed the gluten anymore and if you had yeast overgrowth in your intestine and they die-off, then sometimes  (not always) will cause bouts of diarrhea every now and then for the first few weeks.  And if you cheat on the diet,  there is going to be a party in your abdominal cavity!  LOL!  I'm glad it seems to be helping!  OH YEAH!  NO BEER!  Beer has gluten!

If after a few weeks, it doesn't cure the problem completely, you should either try to go milk ( and its products) free and sugar free.  Gluten, cow's milk and sugar really cause problems for some people.  And the yeast love them!  Make sure you start a multivitamin (gluten free) to replace things missing in your diet.

Keep me posted!

Hello,

After my first day of being on a gluten free diet I've actually noticed a change. Its not been the perfect day, but for once i haven't been sat on my own for hours because of the problem. For breakfast i had an egg and cheese omelet with a glass of water, for lunch i had a jacket potato with tuna mayo, and for dinner mash potato with chicken and carrots. I did not have to go to university today for long, but i think i could have managed a noise free lecture.

As you know this was only my first day and i dont expect perfect results straight away, but the point, is im confident that this gluten free diet may be the cure. To answer the question above i am living in student accommodation with 11 other people on my floor, so i do my own cooking!

One problem i did see today was a slight feel every so often of movement down in my stomach, this kills my confidence, so i hope it continues to improve. Thank you for recommending this i will continue over the next month to see if there is more of a change.

Breakfast:  Sausage mixed with potatoes o'brien , eggs plain, eggs with cheese, egg omelets, plain eggs with plain sausage or bacon or ham, Chex cereals that say gluten free on the front of the box, cocoa pebbles, hot rice cereal, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry instant breakfast (do not use malt flavored ), any fresh, canned or frozen fruit,
most yogurts.  Now I do make gluten free pancakes and waffles, and buy gluten free bagels and bread (brown rice bread).  But since you are just seeing if this is going to help, you don't need to bother buying that stuff just yet.  If the diet helps, then you can try making gf food or buying it (it ain't cheap!).  Any juice is fine - coffee is ok, tea, hot chocolate, water, etc.

Lunch:  most Dietz and Watson lunchmeats are gluten free (check the computer for the gf ones) - I wrap the lunchmeat up in a romaine lettuce leaf and add tomatoes and dressing or mayonnaise, etc. to make it interesting.  If I have gluten free bread around I make a sandwich.  I make salads fairly often - beware of dressings (check labels or the computer for gf ones) .  When I make chicken for dinner, I bake plain chicken breasts and slice them up to put on bread or salads or wraps (romaine wraps) and store in the refrigerator.  Some canned soups are gluten free, but most aren't.  Again, the computer helps alot with this diet.  I think Progresso has a few soups - Lentil, Ham and Split Pea, etc.  Tuna fish mixed with celery and onions and mayo on a bed of salad.

Snacks:  Plain potatos chips (not barbecued), tortilla chips with salsa dip or salsa and velveeta dip, candy that is gluten free (check computer - there are many that are gf), nuts, seeds, trail mix with M&M's, nuts and raisins (NO GRANOLA! ) fruit rollups, etc.

Dinner:  Any meat that is not processed - just plain steak (season it yourself), mashed potatoes (no prepared gravy - usually made with wheat), and a vegetable.  Plain chicken with a rice dish (do not use packaged - they contain gluten) and a vegetable.  Shrimp thown in a pan with frozen asian vegetables (LaChoy soy sauce is gluten free).    I hope this helps.  Jello puddings, regular jello, popsicles and Breyer's plain ice cream for dessert.

I have many food ideas, but they require a little more effort and ingredients.  Like I said, if the diet helps, then I can give you more ideas.  Are you living at school or at home?

One more thing - a gluten problem can also cause a lactose problem.  But if the gluten is removed, the lactose problem usually clears up eventually.  But usually doctors tell you to stay off of milk products until you've been on the diet for a little while.  I never did that though.  I just went gluten free.    I hope this diet helps.....PLEASE let me know how things are going.  I'll keep checking this post for your updates.  If you take vitamins - use a gluten free brand (I use Nature Made).  If you are on medications - check those for gluten by calling the pharmacy.  Good luck!

Hello again, i've decided to post in the hope you recheck this forum, i was wondering if you could give any advice onto what i can do to stick to this diet, are there any easy foods, stacks and breakfasts that you could recommend?

I am a fussy eater even with these gluten foods at hand, so would there be any obvious and easily prepared foods and drink i can eat on a day to day basis?

My husband and I both had that problem.  We tried a gluten free diet (no wheat, barley, rye or oats) and all the gas stopped!  We truly have no more rumblings and tumblings!
So if you'd like to see if it works for you, look up the gluten free diet.  See if it helps.

Sounds like a horrible time you've had.  My dad and sister both have Crohn's disease so we know all about "body" noises.  One bit of help I can provide is for a night out my dad tends to do a movie then dinner.  The other "normal" way around he would spend half of the movie in the WC.  This way is more comfortable for everyone.  You with your pre-dinner gurgling maybe would have it masked by a loud action-packed movie!  Best wishes for answers soon.
