Hi, I have been suffering from chronic constipation for many years, the past 17 being the worse. I am a Nutritionist and I have had many colonics (a.k.a colon hydrotherapy). There are different types of colonics. If you can, try not to use the type where they fill you up with water and then you have to bare down and push to get the water and stool out of you. Your in a slightly squatting position on the table if I remember correctly. The best kind is the "Gravity method." You just lay on down FLAT on the talbe, and gravity causes the water to flo into your colon and flo back out again. You do NO pushing. If the therapist is experienced, she will massage your colon during the procedure and knows just when and where to touch you and when not to. If you are less constipated since having your colonic, that's good. Don't go back unless the problem gets bad again. In fact, what I usually tell people is this...after getting one colonic, start taking probiotics. Most people (and I do mean MOST) who have bowel problems of any kind have an imbalance of intestinal flora. So I tell people to have a colonic, then start taking a probiotic immediately after. Like, as soon as you leave. And then continue taking them every day, increasing the amount gradually according to the directions. Primal Defense by Garden of Life is the very best brand on the market (trust me on this). You can usually buy it cheaper on line than you can in the health food store. Garden of Life also makes a digestive enzyme called Omega Zyme. You might consider taking that too. You don't need to take digestive enzymes with raw foods, only cooked. And most importantly, watch your diet. The best book on what to eat and what not to eat is a book written by Dr. Don Colbert called, What Would Jesus Eat. Aviod foods that come in packages and eat real food. For example, for breakfast eat things like steel cut oats with raw fruit. For lunch eat things like a big raw salad with extra virgin olive oil and balsalmic vinegar, some feta cheese made from goat's milk (dairy from cow's milk is constipating. even goat milk products should be eaten sparingly if you have constipation problems) and some whole wheat bread. For dinner eat stir fried vegetables over brown rice with chicken. And switch from cow's milk to soy milk. And avoid sugar too because it feeds that harmful bacteria in your gut. Eating a high fiber diet consisting of whole, natural foods, and taking probiotics, are the two most important things you can do to help your problem. Colonics are safe, but don't get too many of them. Only get them when you really need them. You never want to get them more than once a week. Because here's something your colon hydrotherapist will not tell you...Colonics wash out the good probiotic bacteria with the bad harmful bacteria. That's why I say, get one, then start taking the Primal Defense the same day and follow a healthy diet. If you start going every day, or even every other day, stop with the colonics. One last thing... Over the past 17 I've been on the macrobiotic diet and every other diet under the sun, trying to get relief from my constipation problems. Once I lived and worked at a health resort in Fla. and ate only raw foods. It was the only time in my life that I had a bowel movement after EVERY MEAL. 3 times a day! So make sure that you eat raw fruit and a big raw vegetable salad every single day. Good luck.
I should have told you this....before taking the Primal Defense Ultra capsules, buy Activia from the grocery store. Eat this while your also trying to eat a high fiber diet as I mentioned above. If eating more fiber and eating Activia every day helps, just keep these things up. If not, then get the PDU. (By the way, sometimes you must eat Activia each day for 2 weeks before your bowels start to move regularly)
