Omentum Removal Surgery

I have been recommended to have omentum removal surgery along with a complete hysterectomy. I do not understand how my body will process/store fat if I have my omentum removed. How can something like that be removed without issue? Is it unnecessary like the appendix?

My omentum was removed April 1, 2010.  I had a 20lb fibroid tumor removed.  The omentum, is usually the first place any type of ovarian cancer likes to spread to.  Since it wraps around most of your organs, the chances of the cancer spreading to them rapidly is high.  they do it as a precautionary action.  Although, my tumor ended up being benign, their attitude was better safe than sorry.  Don't worry, as women, we have plenty of fat storage areas LOL.  I must say though, i've never had a flatter stomach in my life.  Plus its nice to know, i won't ever develop a beer belly.  Doesn't save me from gaining weight everywhere else though.

Why did they specifically suggest your omentum be removed? The omentum has some very specific functions other than some fat storage, so I'm wondering why the heck they'd want to remove that organ. People can get along without it, but why do so if you don't have to - it's not 'unnecessary.'
