Perforated Colon during Routine Colonoscopy

Earlier this year in January 2008 I was perforated 5" by 2" by my doctor during a routine colonoscopy. Apparently doctor did not know he injured me..I advised the attending nurse when I woke up that there is something seriously wrong. I was in so much pain. She rushed to get my clothes on and rushed me out the clinic. When I got home, I told my husband to call the ambulance as the pain got worst. I was taken into the emergency room and I was told  later I was operated on and in ICU for 2-4 days.My surgeon removed about a foot to repair the colon. Recovery was hard but I had an ileostomy takedown done in 3 months. By May I was feeling much like my old self, but do get tired easily.

My question: I would like to know what kind of foods should I avoid to help my colon heal better? I am 54 year old woman and have basically stopped eating red meat as I know it is hard on the colon to digest. But I do drink coke occassionally.

hi, first you should eliminate coke and other fizzy drinks from your diet, they cause bloating and gas which is very bad for your colon, eat plenty of fruit and vegies and have a high fibre diet.

My mom also sustained a small perforation during a routine colonoscopy. She too had to be hospitalized but did not require surgury. She too has been extremely sick for some time (over a month) Has diarrhea everytime she eats, feels nauseous and also very tired. Has to have follow up tests done to see what is going on. Let us know how you are doing. Patti
