Probiotics - what works, what doesn't?

Can we start a discussion about which probiotics work and which ones don't? Any input as to reputable brands, personal experiences for specific concerns, etc.

Hi again Concerned - agree with CalGal on her suggestions, although my only experience with probiotics has been for relapsing C Diff.  I used Florastor (also very expensive) and then the Digestive Advantage-IBS for post-infection symptoms.  Just a side note - not a single doctor or specialist during my illness recommended probiotics, so opinions most definitely vary.  Nurses on the other hand gave me wonderful advice, along with my pharmacist, who recommended acidophillus (sp?) after I finished my antibiotics.  Brands such as VSL#3 and Florastor can be taken along with the meds, as they are proven to survive in the gut.  Also, sometimes taking too many probiotics can mimic symptoms of IBS - so again, talk to your pharmacist about doses etc.  Best of luck to you!

Concerned, I've used PB8 for years and swear by it. For certain specific situations, I've stepped it up to Culturelle and then returned to PB8.  Those I know have found that decent probiotics include Digestive Advantage-IBS. And the 'high power' brand with a lot of clinical studies behind it is VSL#3 - also very expensive, but worth it.
