Questions about symptoms (pain, bleeding)

Hi.

36 year old female here. For the past month and a half or so, I have felt pain in my lower back/seat area whenever I sit and sometimes when I lie down. The more I sit, the more it hurts. It even hurts when getting up, and is sometimes quite intense.

A few days ago, I started noticing red blood in my stools. My stool pattern has been alternating between normal and constipated for the past month and a half, however, the blood in the toilet only started a few days ago.

In 2007 and 2012, I had colonoscopies done which came back normal except for internal hemmorhoids. This past June, I went to the Mayo Clinic due to an unrelated problem and was diagnosed with outlet dysfunction constipation. I was also told I had no hemmorhoids. The symptoms of the outlet dysfunction constipation have since gone into remission.

My questions:

1. Can internal hemmorhoids cause an achy tailbone/bottom area, as described above, for a month or more before bleeding?
2. Can internal hemmorhoids disappear and reappear within a few months time?
3. If my colonoscopy was essentially normal last year, can something more sinister have developed in the meantime? Or do those things take years to happen?

Thank you,

K

Hi, its unlikely that the pain in the tailbone area is due to haemorrhoids. Yes they can vary in size and if your colonoscopy is normal its unlikely that you may have developed a lesion now. If there was a lesson you will have associated symptoms like changes in bowel movements or abdominal pain. The pain could be due to coccydynia, which is pain in the coccyx, or tailbone. It can occur due to injury, childbirth, pressure to the coccyx area, tumors and infections. Please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance. In the meantime you can take OTC Ibuprofen pain medication. Ensure to take this medication after food to avoid gastritis. Regards.

Thank you for your reply! I am sorry I am late in thanking you. In the time that passed since I posted, I did indeed develop excruciating pain when having to make bm's. I saw my GI specialist and he suggested I take an osmotic laxative. Since I started it, the pain and bleeding has lessened, however It took me four days to have a BM. I will give it some time; I go back to see him in a few weeks.
