Rectal spasm pain

My husband has been suffering with rectal pain and pressure for the last month or two. The pain comes after he has a bowel movement. Before he goes, he feels pressure but after he goes he feels soreness and severe rectal pain that comes from spasms. He has had a colonoscopy which came back normal and the doctor says that everything is oaky. We beg to differ because nothing  they have done has eased or stopped the spasms which is causing the pain. He has tried hot cyst baths, PH, suppositories and even prescribed medicine. None of these things have worked successfully. Please advise or recommend something known to work for spasms and pressure pain. It will be greatly appreciated.

Looking for pain relief,

I have had rectal spasms for several years now, maybe 4-5/yr.  I have been woke from sleep and been in the middle of a conversation with someone when it happened.  Your first thought is that you need to have a bowel movement, but while it is happening there is no way you could.  You just have to wait it out.  I have had colonoscopies with normal results, so doctors could not give me an answer for why this  happens.  Once during the night while it was happening I happen to see my tube of Voltaren Gel that I use on my shoulder and tried it.  After the initial burn, it worked and has become the solution for me.

Even if you do not have hemorrhoids, use preparation h suppositories to calm down the spasms helps me and I have less pain after bowel movements.  Try not to expel the suppository ignore it if makes you feel like you have to use the bathroom.

My friend had severe diarrhea and bowels spasms for almost nine months until she decided to tell her chiropractor about it. Two visits, and no more spasms and diarrhea. It would not hurt to try that. Her MD was very happy to see her cured.

I have just been recovering from a laxative overdose which caused the most chaotic bowels battle ever, even sent me to the ER, and am now preparing to schedule an appointment with my chiropractor.

I have had rectal spasms(Levator Spasms)for 20 years. I have tried everything, but no relief. I was searching the web one day and came across website with people who have the same problem as I do.According to several posts on this website, Rectal Spasms (aka Levator Spasms) can be caused by Pudendal Nerve Entrapment. When this nerve becomes inflamed it can cause Rectal Spasms. These nerves run from the upper right and upper left of the buttocks, and then branch off to the anus, testicles, and penis. Several people have had surgery for this problem. Some have said they were completely cured while others report no change in symptoms, and some have been made worse. IMO, If you have had these spasms for several years, then you have a less than favorable outcome on surgery. I am going to Physical Therapist who specializes in Levator Spasms. If that doesn't work I will try pain management.

I had a sigmoid colectomy back in March.  After being home from the hospital less than a week, I felt the severe urge to have a bowel movement.  Everything was working fine to this point.  When I tried to go nothing came out.  I have had this extreme straining/pressure feeling now for over 5 months.  My doctor treated it, not even knowing what it was, with Belladonna & Opium suppositories.  It completely took the urge away.  Now, after taking myself off the suppositories because of a drug test, the feeling is back.  I suffered 10 days severely with Opium withdrawals and do NOT want to get back on them.  I can't stand longer than 5-10 minutes without feeling the constant urge to have a bowel movement.  When I can go, it's just spatters of diarrhea.  I start work again after many years of being off and I don't know what to do.  I am 38 and have had a complete hyster and rectal prolaspse mesh procedure over 3 years ago.  The doctor does not know what it is and I feel like I'm going crazy because I can't enjoy life anymore.  Anyone out there with similar situations.  I have NO pain, just severe pressure like I need to strain and nothing comes out.  Only since surgery last March has this been going on.  What could it be?  I can NOT go back to tge suppositories.

My husband, too, has rectal pain often and is very severe and lasts around 30 minutes or longer.  I tried heating pads, even sticking the finger up a little ways to see if that would relax the rectum.  doctors can't do anything for it.  I even tried a massager and then hand massaging the area.  Nothing worked.  So, my husband laid on his back and bent his knees toward his chest.  He asked me to put pressure on his legs.  So, I got on the bed and sat on the shin area while his legs are bent and leaned forward to put some pressure on and then he asked me to stop when it was the right amount.  After I did that, the pain went away.  so, those of you that are having this problem, try this and see if it helps.

I have rectal spams too, and I found it was any foods with Nutrasweet (or Aspartame) in them that seemed to trigger them (like Diet Coke). This may sound gross, but I found that putting pressure directly on and little in the rectum (like a finger) helped abate the spams.

I am a 42 year old female and have been having this rectal pressure for about 7 days.  I have smoked on and off for about 15 years.  I quit while I was pregnant and nursed my three kids.  I had a colonoscopy 1 year ago because of rectal bleeding and basically was told to take more fiber and quit smoking.  Shame on me I just recently quit smoking and have been trying to take more fiber.  This rectal pressure makes me feel like I'm about to have a bowel movement, but I only go about every 3 days.  I know this is not normal, but I have never had normal bowels.  Have I hurt myself with my smoking habit?  I am scared about this and have no insurance.  Is there anything I can do to treat this on my own without having to pay for another colonoscopy?  What could it be?

I have a spasm only once in a great while, and the pain lasts a very long time, by sitting on the stool relieves the pain pressure and eases my stress, and relaxes me, until the pain is gone, what causes it, is what I'd like to know

I was on a community post about rectal spasms, with a long thread pulling lots of people together, but I can't find it.  I remember only one name - with the word FIRE in it - maybe FIRE ANGEL, or something like that.  Can you find it for me?  It seemed to start in 2004, then went into 2009.  Please help.

I have rectal spasms after a long walk. It really is
painful and makes me nauscious for a while. After I relax
and sit for a while it goes away. Is this just a spasm?? It
hasn't made any difference after having a hysterectomy. What
could it be?

Rectal spasms in some can be caused by pelvic floor dysfunction. If nothing else has worked, you may want to ask your doc to refer you to someone who specializes in pelvic floor dysfunction. Working with the muscles externally and internally can be of help in some people.
