Referred to GI - lower left abdominal pain

I'm so freaking out...

I had gone to my doc 3 weeks ago due to lower left adbominal pain.  I also have constipation on and off  - I use metamucil.  He recommended for me to take docusate sodium stool softener.

However, the pain is still there and it's actually getting somewhat worse.  Now it feels like I'm being poked w/ a sharp object.  No blood, no puss in my poop - so at least that's a good sign.  It's worse when I lean forward.

I saw my doc again today and he referred me to a GI - I'm freaking out and hoping it's not colon cancer.  I'm 30 y/o, there's no history of cancer in my family that I know off, all my labs 3 weeks ago were fine - no high cholesterol, no hepatitis, no diabetes.

I'm feeling very depressed - I've got a wife and two kids and do not want to hear the words colon cancer.  I've read many websites on diverticulitis and hoping that is what I've got...

So, I couldn't take the pain and pressure last night and went to the ER.

I had a couple of ounces of rice, beans, and a flower tortilla and I felt as if someone was stepping on my colon.  It was so painful.

Went to the ER and had a CT w/ contract - and thank God - no kidney stones, no inflammation of any organs, no tumors, praise God.

However, they did find some red and white blood cells in my urine.  I still have some pain.  They think it may be diverticulitis/irritable bowel syndrome and the CT may not have caught it.  Therefore, I'll be scheduled at some point for the colonoscopy w/ a GI.

In the meantime I've done some digging up and it looks like diverticulosis can also cause some blood in the urine.  I'm trying to get my doc to write for an antibiotic so I can get started and if it is the starts of diverticulosis at least I will get some relief from being on the antibiotic.

Thanks everyone who read and responded!

Get a motility check and see if your large intestine is working properly. I have the same problem they thought it was diverticulitus and removed my sigmod colon. What a mistake it got worse. I never new about motility until I went to the Mayo clinic at Rochester.

I truly doubt it's cancer considering your age.  Don't freak out simply because you are being referred to someone who specializes in the digestive system.  A GI can look into the colon and see what's going on, no guessing.  He is an expertise in this area and your GP realizes his limitations and kudos to him for referring you.  The earlier anything is caught the better, so try to relax.  Please keep us posted, as we care and it helps others who may be experiencing the same symptoms.  Take care..
