I used to have this problem until I had my gall bladder removed. I knew as soon as I burped with that taste I would soon be vomiting.
I had completely forgot about this until I suddenly had them today. Now I’m feeling sick at my stomach.
My gall bladder was removed about 12 years ago.
My child has sulfer burps when she doesn't take 80 mg of Pepcid/day. Her diagnosis is GERD.
I have the same symptoms. I am leaning to fructose malabsorption now.... Looks like hydrogen breath test maybe able to diagnose it for most people. Garlic and onions are high in fructans. And everyone has different tolerances and its hard to point by a food diary because levels very a great deal. The only thing I question is that no one seems to have sulfur burps or vomiting as a symptom. Though it does state reflux but I am not sure I would categorize my throwing up as reflux. Need to get that test done!
I am amazed how many people have this problem and yet how little the doctors are able to help. Plus, it is interesting to note how many different triggers as well as remedies I have seen while searching the Internet. Unfortunately, I have tried everything anyone has ever suggested but nothing has brought relief.
My nightmare with this unknown condition started about three years ago (I was 35 then)- sulfur burps, followed by several hours of vomiting even after my stomach was empty. Sometimes during but usually shortly after the vomiting, the diarrhea would start. This went from happening every other month or so to sometimes 3-4 times a month.
After seeing a general practitioner (who was skeptical that anything was even wrong with me) several times, I finally got a referral to my first gastric specialist. He told me that it was very strange that I was experiencing vomiting and diarrhea at the same time when I clearly did not have a common "stomach bug". I had a gastric emptying study as well as an endoscopy and stomach biopsy to test for H. Pylori. Everything came back normal, except for the gastric emptying study, which showed that my stomach was emptying a just little slowly. After telling me that taking PPI inhibiters (basically omeprazole, Nexium, etc) every day was a bad idea, he told me it "might be" gastritis, gave me a list of foods not to eat and that was that. He basically just shrugged his shoulders.
After following his order to the letter- no foods that could get caught in stomach lining like peels on fruit, broccoli, celery or sesame seeds- I noticed no improvement whatsoever. I would sometimes fast for a couple of days and then consume nothing but broth and still, it would happen.
A year later, I had all my records sent to a new gastro and she immediately put me on omeprazole once a day and zofran to take during my "episodes." The zofran helps a little when the nausea is so bad I cannot move or think or even speak, but the omeprazole doesn't seem to do much. I was tested for celiac disease, which came back negative, I've kept a food journal to see if I can pinpoint certain foods that trigger it, but there is no rhyme or reason at all. I've developed a fear of eating and have pretty much been on a liquid diet lately because it makes the vomiting a little less agonizing.
Had another gastric emptying study a couple of weeks ago and this one showed no problems at all. Two days after that, I was back to sulfur burps and vomiting. This time, it was three nonconsecutive days out of seven.
I have an appointment with my gastro next week (4/10/18) and I am ready to get on my knees and beg for her to do anything she can to figure this out. I want another H. Pylori test and a lactose tolerance test. I'm even hoping she'll do another endoscopy just to be sure. I'm so tired of whatever unknown condition this is controlling my life and the anxiety it brings makes it even worse. If I find out anything at all that may be pertinent, I will post here in hopes that it may help someone else.
Much love.
My wife has the same thing. She has been diagnosed with gastritis where there are pockets in the lining of her stomach that collect old partially digested food. A large meal before bed can force these pockets open, the detritus is forced out and she wakes very sick with sulfur burps and vomiting. That isn't the result of a doctors diagnosis but my theory from observation, knowing she has gastritis and deductive reasoning.
I had the same problem and my doctor suggested it could be acid reflux. I was extremely skeptical, as I found on the Net that all my symptoms corresponded to gastroparesis. He put me on a prescription acid reflux pill and the problem went away for three months. I had one more episode, but only after I quit using the pills. Now I am back on the pills, and, frankly, don't care if I take them for the rest of my life, as long as I don't have to go through one of those episodes again. So, ask you doctor if your problem might not be acid reflux.

So here's my remedy, I pray to God. Trust me it will help. Just trust in Him that He'll take care of you and I promise that you'll feel better. After that don't leave Him in the dust, go back and make things right with God. If you don't feel better after asking God to watch over you and put your trust in Him. You can write me the nastiest message ever but I guarantee you'll feel back to normal through His power and His power only
Omg... this is the first time I've seen people who experience the same thing. I'm 14 now, and this has been happening about 1-3 times a year for me, and the instant I get that first sulfur burp I know to cancel all plans for the day. I'm going through a phase right now, and I always think too late to tell my doctor this is a thing, especially because it happens so infrequently. Mine also seems to coincide with a big meal, and then I know I'm going to throw up later. I have managed to avoid it one time by laying down and not moving at all in pain for about 2 hours, but I've never been able to do it since.
I have noticed the exact same trend. A gigantic meal and straight to bed is a recipe for disaster. I will wake up with sulfur burps and know vomiting is imminent within an hour. However, if I take an hour nap after a big lunch on a lazy weekend, sulfur burps begin in roughly 4 hrs and vomiting will follow about 2-3 hrs after. Sometimes, I will have this issue 5 times in the same month, then go several months before the next "spell". I have never been diagnosed. I've been to several doctors (they generally think gallbladder), but an ultrasound will disprove that. When this started a few years ago, I could be bedridden for 2 or 3 days. I have figured out a way to fix it in roughly 5-6 hours now. First, accept you'll vomit, and do whatever it takes to make it happen asap. A teaspoon of baking soda in warm water does the trick (not tasty at all). This will induce vomiting and fix the sulfur burps (or make them a little better in a bad case). Keep drinking water so you'll throw up rather than dry heave. The goal is an empty stomach. Once you have achieved this, Alka-Seltzer is a miracle-worker! Drink it, do your best to hold it down, and take a nap. You may wake up with a weak stomach, but functional. Idk what will happen, but I've read not to do baking soda and alka seltzer. Throw up the baking soda first. The reaction is bad, or so the internet says. I hope someone figures out what this is. Even though I have figured out how to lessen the duration of this rotten egg nightmare, I still have to take way too many days off of work.
OMG, I had no idea there were so may other people who had the same problem as me. Mine happens 4 or 5 times a year and seems to coincide with eating too much the night before. Its been going on since I was a teenager (33 now). Tums used to fix it as long as I caught it early, but lately its happening more often, without over eating and tums does nothing. Pepto tablets seem to do the trick now, hopefully they continue to work. I have never even considered asking my doctor about it because I figured they'd think I was crazy...lol. Has no one gotten a diagnosis?

I've had this problem for years as well, usually 1-3 times a year though it occurred more often when I lived in Orlando FL. I've been through many tests; endoscopy, colonoscopy, many many stool samples, and food allergy testing. All tests came back with clear results with no bacteria, ulcers, allergies, etc. None of the doctors were able to diagnose anything.
I can say medicines such as gas-X, nexium, tums, etc, never helped me; even prescription grade. I did find one specific thing that does help. As soon as I get the first sulfur burps, I rush to Walgreens to get the store brand version of pepto (real pepto doesn't work for me either). Bismuth Subsalicylate, I think it's just called Soothe? I take 2 tablets every 2-3 hours and it keeps all the symptoms at bay or to the minimum and gets rid of the sulfur burps altogether. So yeah, there is a little bit of throwing up and a little bit of diarrhea, but it's not bad and it's manageable rather than keeping me stuck in the bathroom for hours like it used to.
Hope this helps someone else!
I started at a younge age with sulfer burps & gas.
But, it wasn't until I got pregnant, that the vomiting & diarrhea started. Now I get it 2-3x a week. Not fun at all. Now tonight, my son started with the burps, diarrhea & vomiting. Hes only 5. Im not sure what to do...
I had these exact same symptoms and it was horrible. I found that taking a probiotic (you can find it at the drug store) or eating some plain yogurt every day completely cured me.
I'm just now seeing all the comments on here. I discovered that it's an allergy/Intolerance to foods with high amounts of sulfur (garlic, onions, eggs) if I smell garlic or onions I get sick to my stomach and get a horrible headache... If I eat any of those 3 Thins.. Even a bite will cause the burps and vomiting. Hope this helps yall that are experiencing the same thing.
Hi, I too have been dealing with this for a few years. I have been doing a lot of research and came across someone that is doing the charcoal? I am not to familiar with it then another saying that taking Digestive Enzymes helped so I am going to research the Probiotic that also has the Digestive Enzymes in it and give that a shot. I hope that this is the answer to so many miserable episodes of these attacks.
I have the exact same problem and still not diagnosed. I always know when I get the egg burps I'll be vomiting soon and for at least 12 hours. Vomit even smells like eggs. I become so sick! After it's passed I'm layer up for days with a sore body and head from all the pressure with vomiting so much. When I take dexilant I still get gassy in my chest and get horrible upper stomach bloating and pain to the point where I look 6 months pregnant. Stress makes it worse or an empty stomach. I wish someone had an answer for these symptoms. My doctor looks clueless.
Look into Giardia, parasite infection that causes all the above symptoms and is seen down here on the border of Mexico. Transmitted thru the water or thru stool contamination. Usually treated with Alina for three days. It is very contagious, and you can reinfect yourself very easily.
Kristina, I had the same exact symptoms as you for months and I was diagnosed with chronic gastritis. My doctor also told me to stay away from foods that contain "sulfur dioxide" because it initiates the sulfur burps. Try mentioning both the gastritis and sulfur dioxide to your doctor and see what he says. I now take Nexium and I've been symptom-free for months. I hope you get diagnosed!
Kristina, try this:
1. Breath test for H. pylori infection of the stomach
2. Breath test for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
Lactose intolerance or fructose malabsorption could also contribute to bacterial overgrowth, nausea and burping. In both conditions, bloating and diarrhea commonly appear.
What you can try before any test is:
1. Eliminate sulphur containing foods:

2. Have a 4 day lactose-free diet trial and if necessary another 4 day low-fructose diet trial.
Regarding your acid reflux history, I'd suspect H. pylori first though.
