Severe, debilitating rectal pain all day. Any suggestions?

My sister in law has been struggling for years with digestive problems. It first started with acid reflux, then GERD. She had her gall bladder removed last year with no complications, hoping to alleviate any further digestive issues. She began taking a digestive enzyme, and believes this injured, and burned her colon and rectum. She was greatly concerned so went to her Dr. and scheduled an appt. for a colonoscopy and had some biopsies taken. The results came back normal. She has now been experiencing severe pain and burning in her rectum all day long. It even wakes her up in the middle of the night. It has been over 6 weeks since these biopsies. Her doctor told her there is nothing wrong, she should be fine. The Dr. did give her a Rx for a steriod to help the swelling, and ambien to help her sleep. At this point, her doctor has stated there is nothing more he can do for her. She feels that the steriod caused her to flare up and caused more swelling. Do you think she could have had an allergic reaction to the steriod? How can she be having this severe pain and dicomfort and nothing be wrong? The pain she is having, is so extreme it keeps her awake at night, she cannot go up stairs, lift anything heavy, or sit for very long. Could this be from her biopsies be reopened? She is so fearful to take anything for fear of it upsetting her stomach and injuring her already sensitive colon and rectum. She is trying Aloe Vera juice, and I have heard of taking Slippery Elm Inner bark she has begun to try that also. Can anyone relate, or have any sililarities, or any advice? I looked up on the Internet and found a condition called Proctalgia Fugax. She feels this usually only occurs at night, so she does not feel this condition is what is going on with her. Any information you may have will be great.
Thank you,
Tracy from Texas

After the gallbladder removal, bile is constantly leaking into intestine, and sometimes it can't be all re-absorbed in small intestine, as usually, so it reaches the colon, where it causes burning pain. It is a drug cholestyramine, which binds this excessive bile and both the drug and bile are excreted with the stool then.

Fibers, as ground flax-seeds, colloidal bentonite, and psyllium husk may have the same effect as cholestyramine, so maybe these should be tried.
