Sigmoid Colectomy 6 months ago

I had a sigmoid colectomy six months ago, I have Hyperplastic Polposis Syndrome, a large number of polyps, one specifically golf ball size detected by a colonoscopy that had be removed surgically. Fortunately no cancer!I'm a 52 year old male and this was my first major surgery, had my tonsils out as a child. I had 7 inches of my sigmoid colon removed. I was given the impression that in 2-3 months I'd be "as good as new". I still get tired more easily, have abdominal pain, blood when I wipe sometimes, not constipated but not quite right also. I'm going in two weeks for a follow up colonoscopy which when I saw my surgeon last, he said should tell us if everythings ok or if theres adhesions forming ect....just curious if others have experienced similiar recoveries. I've heard from some that a year is really the time frame to be feeling 100% again.

A polyp in my sigmoid colon was to large to remove during colonoscopy. Most of the polyps were concentrated in the section of colon removed, It was done laposcopically. 2 weeks from tommorrow my follow up colonoscopy and have been told that depending on how that goes will dictate the frequency of future colonoscopies ie close surveillance.

I am curious why only the sigmoid colon was respected. This is a relatively new syndrome. Hyperplastic polyps have previously been viewed as merely inflammatory with little, if any, malignant potential but patients with hyper plastic polyposis syndrome clearly have an increased risk. Close surveillance is the recommended course with resection if this is not feasible. Resection in this situation typically means an abdominal colectomy. I'm unclear on the indications for a much more limited resection. Regarding your question, I would fully expect a patient to be back to 100% six months after a laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy. Ongoing bleeding needs to be evaluated.
