Spleen Enlarge

Hi, I want to know what can a patient's family do to help a person who is suffering from spleen enlarge? She feels a lot of pressure is pushing up and her whole stomach is so puff up. Without surgery and radiation what else can i do to make her feel a little bit comfortable in her situation?

I'm so sorry to hear that they've discharged her from the hospital without providing you with any answers.  It is so hard when you don't what's causing your symptoms.  Please let me know when she finds out what's going on?  You are both in my thoughts and prayers.  It's disgusting that they couldn't even be bothered to give her a wheelchair on the way out.  That makes me really angry, too.  She is obviously suffering and they definitely should have shown her more compassion and respect.

Hang in there!

All the best,

Sam

she was in the hospital while this happen but the doctors did nothing. i complained so many times yet they said they can't really help unless they figure what's wrong. i was so disappointed and while her leg was swollen like there are lots of water inside and her spleen is HUGE but they still ask her to discharge from the hospital... and when they discharge they don't even get a wheel chair for her. i was so pissed off yet what can i do. even though i complained yet things still the same. i just want the result come out fast so the doctor could be able to know what's wrong and i hope the medication she is taking for the spleen could help. and i tried to put pillows under her calves but she said it's tiring her leg so i got to remove it... thanks for the reply Sam i really appreciate for all these conversations we had. Thank you so much for the information!

You could always try to put a couple of pillows under her calves so that they are elevated a bit.  That might ease the pressure and swelling a bit.  She also shouldn't cross her legs.

Is there any way you could call the doctor and ask for some medication to ease the swelling and pain?  They may not want to do this until they know what's going on but if she's in severe distress, it can't hurt to let them know.  Thank you for being so caring and compassionate.  It must be incredibly difficult for both of you and it's wonderful that she has you to lean on.

Hang in there!

She is at home now and the test will need at least two weeks to get the result and in her condition, everything is the same nothing change much but her spleen gets a little bit relax, her tummy isn't as large as before but she still have a terrible swollen legs. and nothing you mentioned above helped her. and i am trying to make her comfort by finding different methods, and i'm still trying... thanks for the reply.

Did she stay in the hospital or is she home now?  Are the pain, pressure and bloating the same, better or worse?  Does a heating pad or water bottle ease her discomfort at all?

If you get a chance, could you let me know when she gets any news?

Hang in there!!!!

All the best,

Sam

As someone who has had mono a number of times, there are two different tests they can do for mono, the mono spot test and the heterophile antibody tests.  The problem with them is that you have mono symptoms for up to six months but the tests will only show positive for one or two days.  You have to have the tests the very first day you notice that you are sleeping WAY too much and, well, during that time, you're sleeping.  Take heart that she will recover from mono!!!  It's serious because the spleen could rupture if they don't get it under control but she is in the right place to be cared for!!  When she is released, under no circumstances should she be allowed to list ANYTHING for six months!!!!!  It's important.

You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers!

All the best,

Sam

Hi there:

I'm so sorry your friend is suffering and I think it's amazing of you to want to help.  I'm not a doctor and don't know much about medicine.  Here is a link to treatments and drugs that are available: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/enlarged-spleen/DS00871/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs and http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec14/ch179/ch179b.html.  Has your friend been diagnosed with Hodgkin's?  Acute infectious mononucleosis can cause an enlarged spleen and extreme fatigue.

God bless, Godspeed and good luck,

Sam

The biggest thing that can be done is to find the cause of the enlargement and try to remedy that. I hope the docs are pursing the cause of the problem.
