borborygmi noises

Hi i am 21 year old male and i am a 1st year medical student...I dont know if i have got IBS or not because i have never been diagnosed with the same whenever i went to my doctor regarding the problem. I am on the verge of failing my University because of this embarrasment caused due to wierd noises from the left anterior side of my abdomen. These noises are heard clearly in the quietness of the lecture hall and i have to start turning pages or something in order to minimise this noise...My problem is getting out of control. I dont feel like going to lectures or even worse..tutorials where there are only 10 people and relatively more quieter than lecture halls. The thing is this problem has gone worse since i have started noticing this sounds. I cant even concentrate on my lectures because i am constantly on a look out for when its gonna make the noise..CAN SOMEBODY HELP coz i dont want to give up my uni..i have struggled a lot to get admisson in med school and certainly dont want to give up my ambition just coz of this stupid borborygmi noises.

This discussion is related to borborygmi.

I meant plain yogurt of course.

Regarding olive oil and soda... Edgar Cayce recommended both things for certain people: olive oil in small quantities thoughout the day (a few drops or 1/4 tsp at a time).  And for others, cola syrup (1 tsp?) or flat (no longer fizzy) cola.  He also said never to eat when in distress or anger, just sip buttermilk (yogurt might be close enough).

Hi I'm 27 years have been suffering from this for tge past year. Read a thread here which suggested I buy shock and anxiety medication over the counter. This was the best decision of my life. I bought this in the form of drops, I bought Natura rescue drops. Tablets are available as well. The noise subsided instantly I couldn't believe it. Been taking this for a week and I don't regret it one bit.

Not sure exactly which site i found it on but someone said this can be caused by swallowing air because of nervousness. Their cure was an anti anxiety/depression medicine. The person said their gastroenterologist recommended it. I'm currently looking this up cause i gotte'ted drunked and now me tummy is rummbling but if this is causing u serious problems mby this is something u should look into. GL and peace out, may da force be wit u.

Hi,
I also have recently started having these noises.  I have been to hospital and the doctors so many times.  I had previously been diagnosed with functional dyspepsia and chronic constipation.  I was instructed to take movocol every day and also eat plenty of fibre and fruit and vegetables.  this has greatly helped the acid in my stomach and i am no longer in pain.  Unfortunately now i have really bad borborygmi...it is awful.  I also feel like i cant sit in quiet rooms as my bowels make such noises, it is embarrassing! It seems like i cant win - i have got to the stage where i think i would rather go back to being in pain than have this social embarrassment!  I am going to start keeping a diary of everything i eat and when the noises start - at the moment i havent recognised any food triggers so hopefully keeping this diary will help! I honestly know how you are all feeling, hopefully it will get better in time for all of us! Good Luck!

I'm in the same boat as you. I go to uni and suffer the same in tutorials and lectures - it's horrible in the dead silence of the rooms so I know how you feel. No idea why it's started up because my diet has stayed about constant. For me the growls and churning and gurgles only come in the mornings and seem to pass after an hour and then I'm fine for the rest of the day so I only have to dread mornings...

In my general research pro-biotics have come up as a good aid for digestion. High fibre foods are also good for digestion, but there's also that contradiction that you should avoid them too....
I've been having pro-biotic yogurt but dairy is something to supposedly avoid also..

A teaspoon of olive oil has also been suggested for borborygmi and I tried it today but still came up with the noises. But maybe it would take a while for the olive oil to work...now the noises have passed (i think) but not sure if it would have passed anyway whether or not I had the olive oil. But it's worth to try it out.

Trial and error I guess is the only thing you can do which is what I'm trying to do. I'll let you know if I find anything that works.

My doctor says to reduce fiber intake.
I've read that drinking warm soda, such as 7-up or ginger ale, helps. You also recommend drinking soda, but that contradicts what you said about acid drinks, such as Coke, being a cause.
What's your response?

i suffer from borborygmi myself, i discovered that some causes  were lactose, acid food, some acid drink with gas like coke, and excess of fruit juices like apple juice and some vegetables like cabbage.
i have some solutions : drink soda, eat fiber (all bran) regularly, a cup of alcohol with high percentage (40%) provide releaf too

As simplistic as it sounds, try checking your diet. Since the sounds are typically a result of air/liquid/feces mixing and the amount of 'gas' may be due to the by-product of bacterial action. If the bacteria are having field day with what you're eating, it could be a contributory factor.

Also consider trying some probiotics - they might help. Decent brands are Culturelle, Digestive Advantage-IBS, FloraQ and a few others. But those are the ones I know are effective across a broad range of people.
