Stress and farting

Hi, I'm having problems with farting. It's been years now, I'm always farting whenever I sit down with a group of friends or beside strangers on the bus or in the cinema. It just wierd I would just feel the urge to fart. Is something wrong with me? I can't seem to control it and this caused me to lose my friends...

Guys, hi,
I am a French IT programmer (tending to overstimulate my brain). As a student I remember having only such farts being younger and only in clubs, (imagine people stepping back 5m from the source..the worse is that it is not controllable.. Once I just wanted to block it physically..). The problem came 3 months ago more and more frequently, putting a lot of doubts and endangering self-confidence.

I believe this sickness is there for a psychosomatic reason, we cannot solve it by medicaments,  this would be too easy. I do not look at the problem so technically like a cancerologist would for a cancer, some healed without them. We have to work on ourselves, accept our anxieties, shift our paradigm of thinking to a higher level than just the physical problem itself.

Digging into it, I see 3 connected reasons:
- a psychological drama in the period when all this might have started, my grandpa died 1 year ago of a prostate cancer a few months after the grandma who had an accelerated alzheimer (brain degenerescence)
- since I've started to be a IT developer, I overthink, good at what I do though but I get more anxious, more impatient, always thinking
- I live in Czech Republic and the food there disturbed a bit my eating habits in France but that is since past 3 years

Our bodies are linked by neural networks, a huge amount of them are located around the stomach (correct me if I am wrong). So I am not surprised that the brain impacts the whole body, specifically my intestines.

In the past, I usually had stomach problems when feeling stressed and I preferred having that symptom to evacuate the tensions. Which is what I think happens.

If one cannot erradicate the problem, one can at least transform it. It's not the first time I have some psychosomatic symptom in life.

The self-reflection is a strong tool to healing. so let's also analyze deeper

This may not help - but just remember that all of your mental problems start in the brain, and the brain is the control centre of the body. This is a problem that starts from feelings of anxiety and panic. Meds can help, if you find the right ones. But it's better to get to the bottom of it (pun not intended). Removing added sugars from your diet helps - and that includes all the hidden sugars like those in 'low fat' and 'diet' products, sauces, juices, etc. It will at least give you a clearer mind, and you will be able to deal with possible panic situations better. Just think of your body as an engine, if you don't give it what it needs, it will not function properly.

I always get heartburn which I hate cause I feel like I cant move! I have to keep drinking water. I had this in fourth grade and 5th grade it stopped and 6th grade its worst. I dont want it no more. I barley have friends now I always sit outside by myself. I just want to be home schooled so I can stop being judged.

hey! Finally I found someone who has the same problem as me! This farting problem is driving me crazy! I'v been suffering this nightmare for 4 years now! I went to many doctors, I tried every diet, took medicines... but nothing worked!! I'm pretty sure that the excessive farting is related to stress; because I start farting whenever I'm in class, around strangers or friends.. And especially in Winter; the bad weather made it worse! I can't concentrate in class, and I always feel the need to escape classes or go to the restroom to avoid bothering my classmates with the bad smell... Although, when I go out I don't fart!!!! I REALLY NEED HELP WITH THAT

I too suffer from severe social farting. Seated at work I am a continuous gasbag. It is definitely abnormal peristalsis in the large colon. If I get up suddenly from my workstation to go to the bathroom to fart, I can feel the stools moving rapidly back up the colon as well as the gas. Then I'm hanging around in the bathroom for ages waiting to clear the gas and it won't come! As soon as I am seated at my workstation again, the stinky gas is there again in my rectum. Its absolutely infuriating - and very disruptive to my working day.

I have found that brassica vegetables are a principal trigger - if I knock all cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, calabrese etc out of my diet, I fart far less. Its unfortunate that these are particularly healthy vegetables - and I like eating them. I am considering getting my doctor to refer me to a dietitian to develop a healthy diet without the sulphur-containing compounds that make the smelliest gas.I tried the charcoal tablets for a while. I had black stools - and still farted, so gave up with that.

I think the reason cause this is  the large intestine  move much quickly than normal.  So the air in the intesine is pushed to the anus all the time  when we feel nervous. when we are stay along ,we relax, so the large intestine  doesn't push the air . But how we can cut off the move when we feel nervous. It 's we should study objet.

I have exactly the same problem.  I'm find when I'm alone but when I'm with a crowd of people it's a total different story.  I suffer from social phobia and I know for a fact that the anxiety attacks cause excessive gas.  The other problem is that I keep thinking about it when I'm among a group of people and this just makes it worse, but it's the fear of the humiliation that causes me to think of it even before I enter a room full of people.  Even one-on-one with my boss or a stranger is a scary thought, because I always have to excuse myself and go to the bathroom, but sometimes I can't find a gap in the conversation to do so.  I am taking medication for the social phobia, but the medication that I'm taking doesn't help much for the gas problem.

All the posts are excellent, there is not much I can add except, I, too, fart, when I am lucky that is. Sometimes, when I am really nervous, my tummy will gurgle, I will get a "dropped" feeling in my tummy and even some irregular heart beats, all due to gas, but, I will not be able to pass, it is miserable, I feel like a walking dirigible. Finally, when I am able, it will come out in long streams, then I feel better.

You bet nerves can cause this, I think, for me at least, when I get nervous, I will swallow a lot of air, and this in turn causes the gas and unpleasant feelings. Sometimes taking a digestive aid when I eat helps, but, not always, for me, Tums is the best.

I would just like to say, that I have an anxiety disorder and I fart all the time. Whenever I start to have a panic attack or something really stressful happens and I feel like I cant cope, I will have a bad stomach ache like my stomach turns over and I have that feeling in the pit of my stomach like something bad is going to happen. Regardless of the stimuli (sometimes it doesnt even happen when something stressful happens), it is a very unconfertable feeling. Sometimes I will fart and sometimes I will just have a stomach ache. Although, if I am very stressed, it will almost be a cascade of farts coming. Yes this sounds funny, but you must understand that it is a very unconfertable feeling and situation. I dont have really any other gastrointesinal problems other than that and moderate constipation. Generally when my anxiety is taken care of, Im prescribed xanax, my stomach aches and gas is taken care of too. And as for my diet, I eat rather healthy. Hope this helps.

Please, see someone where you live.  Don't listen to someone diagnose you on a website.  Definitely don't go on powerful drugs just for farting, for God's sake.  Everyone farts, especially the more fiber that's in your diet.  Chew slower, try a digestive enzyme, but if you're going to change your diet and such, see a holistic nutritionist or naturopath in your area and make your own decisions.  If you have a serious anxiety problem, you might want to see a psychiatrist, but since your problem seems minor, I would say go see a therapist instead.  Drugs have their own sets of problems, why get into that if you don't need them?

I'm really not trying to prove how smart I am, I just don't trust the person giving you advice.  I wouldn't take it.  Now you do whatever you think is best.
