The gut does NOT function as normal after a j pouch

It is not true that the gut will function "more or less as in a normal person" after j pouch. If a doctor tells you that, he does not have much experience with it.

Not really a gastroenteroloigist. Mine told me he is somewhat appalled at the number of colectomies he is seeing and does not understand why surgeons are opting for this before exhausting all other trials.

and not being able to eat any raw fruits and vegetables is "normal", it certainly was not like that for me before. There is also an almost constant battle to keep hydrated and maintain acid base balance. I say, if you HAVE to have your colon removed (I am not sure I had to) the j pouch might be an option....but please consider carefully and read some of the online chats, blogs, etc.....many many ppl have alot of trouble with them and the musculature of your pelvic is, in fact, forever changed.

Welcome to the gastroenterology community!  I'm sorry you have had such a hard time from this surgery.  However there are people that have had a j pouch surgery, that now function more or less as a normal person.  Let me know if you have any questions.
