Unexplained abdominal pain

I am a 32 yr old female with previous GI problems.  When I was 15 I was diagnosed with GERD and was treated until I was 24 when it was determined that I needed to have a lap nissen to stop the reflux.  I also had my gallbladder out when I was 20 because it was not functioning properly.  When I was 25 I was diagnosed with IBS and was treated over the next several years with Bentyl.  Early last year I started having problems with constipation instead of diarrhea and we have tried several meds to help the constipation but nothing seems to work very long.  In March of this year I started experiencing abdominal pain with nausea, vomiting and weight loss.  I have lost 19 pounds so far and I still have the nausea and vomiting.  I have had I think every test under the sun from lab to CT's, barium enema's, colonoscopy, EGD, X-ray's and numerous labs including Celiac, CMV, mono and immune tests.  The EGD revealed that I had the acid production and the stomach was very inflammed so I was put on Protonix.  I have to take phenergan on a regular basis to help the nausea and I am having a hard time functioning when the pain and nausea hits.  When the pain hits I almost fall down and feel like I will pass out when it happens.  Then comes the bloating and I feel 9 months pregnant again.  After a few days this resolves and I just have to wait for the next attack.  The attacks have gotten better since I have went off Gluteen. (I am actually allergic to wheat according to allergy tests) but the constipation and pain have not gone away yet.  I am having bowel movements about once a week and I am just at a loss for what to do next.  My GI specialist is wanting to send me to have a second opinion because the only thing left that he can think of is Porphyria.  Can you help me with trying to figure out what to do next to stop this horrible pain.

Wow.  You sound EXACTLY like me with the exception of the Nissen procedure.  Look up adhesions and small bowel obstruction and I bet you'll find the symptoms are what you're dealing with.

Adhesions are just scar tissue that forms after any inflammation or injury - like surgery.  Sometimes it forms on your bowels and causes them to twist and untwist.  When the waste can go through, you get pain, bloating, nausea and vomiting.  To add to the fun, the scar tissue doesn't show up on tests either, so you have to convince a surgeon to do an exploratory laparoscopy to at least look in there and see what's going on.  The surgeon can cut those adhesions down right there and then.  Of course, the problem is convincing a surgeon to open you up without some kind of test giving him a reason.  With your past surgical history and current symptoms, I think it would be worth it look into.

I've dealt with adhesions and obstructions for 10 years.  Guess I'm just one of the "lucky" ones who grow the stuff like weeds.  Like you, I take phenergan every day along with pain meds.  The biggest problem is eating and maintaining decent nutrition.  Do a google search on "low residue diets".  It really helps with the pain factor to avoid foods with a lot of fiber.

Have you had your kidneys checked for kidney stones? Kidney stones are very painful and when they move out of the kidney and into the uretra it can cause the colon to shut down and let the barfing begin and because it shuts the colon down you can get constipation that is awful. Sometimes when you throw up and have nausea it isn't about the digestive tract so much but maybe another organ not being able to function properly. Yes, this did happen to me for almost 8 months. The pain is AWFUL and drops you to your knees and you sweat and throw up and basically feel like death. This may or may not be your problem but I would include it in the search. Good luck to you and God Bless!
