Upper and Lower Right side Pain-Need advice!

I've been on 100mg of Topamax since the end of November. After a full month on 100mg I got the great side effect I was hoping for-the loss of appetite. (I'm on Topamax for Migraines) At the end of December, I started getting terrible upper right quad pain. Thought I might have had gallstones, but negative CT and Ultrasounds. The pain spread throughout my upper and lower right side, even around to my back and up under my arm and into my shoulder. The pain eased up after a few weeks. Now is dull and achy with pressure. The pain is constant, never goes away, sometimes worsens, but not for long, then goes back to dull and achy. Also had an EGD-negative results. Being treated for acid reflux-meds helps my reflux but not my right side pain. NOW, after all this, my question is that I'm wondering that since I started on the Topamax my appetite went to very very little food/day. Did I do this to myself and damage something because I wasnt eating much? I just couldnt force myself to eat in the beginning on the Topamax. Now I have a lot of my appetite back, so I'm better at my eating habits. Did this dietary change screw up my digestive system?????? HELP!!! I hope my DR's dont think I'm some sort of hypochondriac since they cant seem to find anything wrong! But I'm in pain, but I dont want to quit the Topamax either-it helps my migraines tremendously AND I'm losing weight. HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM while taking Topamax? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Please, I hope you are still involved in this website.  I had the very same thing you have and you MUST stop taking Topamax.  I have been diagnosed with Barrett's Esauphogus and it could turn to cancer.  Your pain in your right side will go away if you stop, it will come back once in a while but that is it.  Please, before it is too late through those pills away.  I feel your pain.  You are not making this up, I went through exactly what you did, test after tests only to show negative.  Please let me know where you stand now.  Take good care

i been sick for 7 years and have had some bad dr's let me tell you.  After being told i had lupus and rhuematism i went to a rhuematologist becuase i litteraly cannot eat half the time i hurt so bad and i was diagnosed with chronic active hepatitis b and they are saying (now) that could be the problem. i have been diagnosed with gastritis, gastroperesis, esophogus problems and now arthritis my knees even fill with fluid.  i am trying to find out if this indeed could be the hepatitis b because there have been no other anwers. very frustrating. i was also told you could have cirrosis of the liver and your blood work can be fine.  anyone who knows anything about this would be great to hear from.  anyone have simular problems?  don't give up but a hemotolgist i hope is going to be my answer the gastroenterologist has been of little help in the long run.  Ginny

I'm not sure what an EGD is but have you have your liver, pancrease and stomach enzymes tested to see if there is an elevated level here?

I have been on Topamax, just 25mg per day, for 2 1/2 years.  It really helped the headaches but I have had cronic intestinal infections and UTIs.

This past weekend I came to the conclusion that it must be the Topamax and the Imitrex that is causing this.  So, Google and I have been working on finding the precious little about this combination of effects.  I need to get to the specialists that are treating me and present some of my findings.  I am sure they will love me coming with the few remarks about this that I have found.

I appreciate what you had to say.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I know how it feels to have the doctors look at you like you are nuts! I even know about the mysterious rib pain, I've had it and still have it myself. I'm sorry I can't help you with a diagnose, but I can tell you that you should give those doctors the same look right back! If you feel something is wrong then don't let it go. Keep on insisting they find out the cause. Often it takes a while for other symptoms to show and make a clearer picture or for blood tests to help give a clue. I know because in the year I have been sick I have gone from having normal blood to now showing an elevated wbcc, my thyroid tests showing hypothyroidism and now my blood pressure is high. I am getting closer to an answer as well.

Good luck.
