Why are bowel to skin fistulas producing all the time?

My father had part of his intestine removed almost a year ago when he suddenly fell ill on holiday (later the removed piece was found to have been cancerous, though the operation to remove it was possibly substandard).

Since then he has had problems with fistulas (5 now) which do not stop producing. This has been a problem since the operation, and he has been hospitalized several times, nil by mouth, to try to stop them so he might have surgery. They leak continually, no matter what is done.

Does anyone have experience of this? My father was a proud man and is now a skeleton with a humiliating problem who might never recover. I want him to get better.
