Does someone who has had 18 inches of his intestine removed need to be on a special diet

Depends on the condition your intestines are in. If you had polyps then I would say stay away from any type of seeds. If you had this done for weight loss and no underline issues where found then you can eat anything you want.

It depends a bit on what section of the small intestine was removed. Each section is more-or-less specialized to absorb certain components. Has the individual checked with their doctor?

If the removal was confined to the large intestine, which is 'specialized' to reabsorb a lot of the fluids that exit the small intestine, but changes might have to be made to the diet to avoid a more watery bowel movement.
