gagging attacks, starts to dry heave

My husband suffers from gagging attacks, and then he starts to dry heave and/or choke and cough.   It's not accompinied by nause however he will gag so hard that he will vomit up some phlem.  This happens every day, some times several times a day, every time he takes a shower, once in a while while he is sleeping, some times in the morning, some times in the evening, some times outside, some times inside, while he is driving.  In other words I happens just about any time.  Does not weem to be related to eating, what he eats, what time he eats, or how much he eats.

He has been doing this for 5 years.  He has had an upper GI, X-rays, blood work, been on Prilosec, gargles salt water.  And still he does this every day.  It last for any where from 1 minute to 3 minutes.  The ear, nose and mouth specielist say there is no anotomical reason for this to be happening.  The Prilosec have no effect on the severity or the frequency of the gagging and dry heaving.

Any ideas where to go or what to do?

I've had this problem since I was about 18 and I am 27 now every morning like clockwork I dry heave for at least 15-30 mins, but during certain seasons it worsens or gets better usually in the winter its the worst for me. I wake up no dry heaving for the 1st hour and then like a whirlwind from no where, I start hacking, yaking, throwing up phlegm etc...I have had asthma since I was born so I thought that could be a factor but the fact my asthmatic lungs have improved over time and since a lot of you have the same problem without the asthma I guess I can throw that conclusion out the window. I dont suffer from anxiety, but when it starts up I get extremely frustrated I tried everything from showers, gargling, brushing teeth to chugging water. After I chug water though it does something and makes me throw up a huge glob of clear mucus (Its gross I know) and it looks like a gigantic loogie is falling out of my mouth, but after that it will stop so I think excess mucus could be a factor I also smoke Marijuana, Now many of you may think that MJ could be a cause but in fact it makes it stop I could be in the middle of a hacking episode and take a couple puffs and it stops completely for the rest of the day. I also saw someone say booze helps Idk if that does but I know for sure MJ helps with mine but I just wish it was non existent. But I do find some solace in knowing I'm not the only one suffering from this mysterious affliction

I definitely have these same symptoms. So far caffeine and dehydration seem to be most relatable to me.It does happen in the shower often or even when I just walk into a bathroom. It is brief and intermittent.Just when I think I am over it,it comes back.I have often wondered if it is psychological, but I am started to think it might be a combination of both.It is embarrassing and impossible to stop once it starts. For now I think drinking more water and less caffeine is my plan.

I have found that marijuana helps to alleviate the problem. I can not drink caffeinated coffee because that will definitely bring it on...as well as too much caffeinated soda. Have you tried decaff to see if that might be part of the issue.

It does sound and feel like I am going to vomit. It usually lasts a minute or so. Once I gag and cough I usually spit up a good amount of saliva and phlem and then I am fine for awhile. It now seems to me that besides all the things I mentioned in my first post that I think causes it (caffeine, alcohol, etc), I have noticed it comes back when I am stressed. I went for months without a problem and then a couple of months ago it came back and is sporadic. I have had a stressful time lately with health issues (cancer) and work (will be unemployed soon). I have been taking zanax daily now so the attacks are few and far between.
