Depends on the symptoms. If you have heartburn or acid reflux, an over-the-counter medication like Omeprazole taken in tandem with about 400mg magnesium (essential element that helps heal the esophagus) may be enough to get you by along with kicking back on caffeine & greasy/oily/spicy foods which are notorious heartburn triggers. Not drinking or eating a lot within about 2 hours of bedtime might also help nighttime symptoms. Surgery is usually reserved for emergency cases and even the best surgeon will tell you that even an operation may not be sufficient to help the problem.
