Ileus is not uncommon after surgery.  They don't really know how to treat it or get it to resolve until it's ready.

If what your brother is experiencing is 'delayed gastric emptying' or gastroparesis, his doc will probably suggest he start something similar to a more 'soft/liquid diet and he/she may also try some medications like reglan which may help to improve stomach motility. No one really understands why the stomach will suddenly stop working properly, but in some it has been found to accompany gallbladder issues.

He might want to google for information on a gastroparesis diet.
