rectal bleeding

I recently had a large amount of bleeding from my rectum.  I thought i was having diarhhea and was 100% blood.  I went to my doctor and he just ordered blood work, and said he couldnt do anything for me.  And referred me to a specialist.  About 1 hour after bleeding my back, right side, and lower back and lower abs, is very crampy.  What could be the problem.

Hi - I have been having the same type of symptoms that you have described. Are you continuing to bleed? I was told that NO amount of blood being passed through the rectum is normal, and further testing should be done. I am having an emergency colonoscopy done tomorrow - you should ask your doctor about having one done, too. Good luck to you - and take care of this problem before it gets worse.

I agree with butterscotch23.  Rectal bleeding is never normal and should always be investigated.  If the bleeding is torrential or if you are expelling frequent significant volumes of blood this can be life threatening and you will require emergency hospital treatment and blood transfusions.  Five years ago I suffered massive diverticular bleeding and, over a period of several days, I required about 16 pints of blood plus other I.V. solutions etc.

Maybe your experience is not so dramatic as mine but don't allow yourself to be in a situation where you are "stranded" at the time when a major loss of blood suddenly occurs.

Good luck

Agree - do not let anyone tell you to wait it out, get it diagnosed.

Go - complain - get attention.    If they do not know what is happening, they cannot help.

Good luck
