smoky odor

I emit a burning, smoky odor, like a wood stove's smoke.  It is noticeable to others, (as opposed to the olfactory problems I see on the site, where people keep smelling smoke but no one else smells it.)  People keep asking what is burning, and if there's a wood stove or fireplace burning, and my clothing holds the odor when I take them off.  The smell comes and goes throughout the day, usually occurring at least twice a day, and lasting for several hours.  It has been happening for nearly a month, though I don't emit the smell on some days.
I have an EGD scheduled, but couldn't get in until next month, as referred by my Internist.
My internist never heard of this before.
I had a history of GERD, but it hasn't bothered me except occasionally since several years, and I take an occasional (every 2 mos. on average) over the counter Prilosec PRN.
Has anyone ever heard of this?  I am increasingly concerned and frightened.

I don’t have an answer for this. I notice this is an old post. But I have this issue as well. Mine also comes and goes I was asleep last night and happened to wake up. I could smell smoke I started to ask my friend if he could smell it. I believe there is something going on in the sinus although I have been to ent. I was in the store several years back and a lady commented that she smelled something burning. It’s definitely coming through the airway.

There are many people who worry about emitting certain odors. Some people think they're making the whole thing up, but I'm not one of them, not after working peripherally with a gentleman in Philly some years ago. I'm going to attach a link, and I sure hope they allow it to remain (we'll see), but this guy isn't a kook. He's a scientist who has done some really good work on the subject of odors. In fact, some of what the Monell Chemical Senses Institute does is study all of the variations of what consitutes 'smell' and odors, from the molecular level on up.

The gentelman's name is George Preti, and he's quite a character. He was one of the first guys who started studying bacteria on the back of the tongue as a cause of one source of problems and 'smells.' And you haven't lived until you've been routed out of your lab and 'volunteered' to help him in his underarm studies - LOL! But seriously, if you don't find any help with the doc you're going to see, you might want to see if you could somehow contact this gentleman to see if there's any way you might be able to find the cause of your problem. There's no promise that he can tell you what's going on, but when someone is worried about something like a body odor, I don't think promises matter. Just the fact that someone believes you and is willing to try is a big plus: http://ww.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20070426/news_lz1c26citizen.html
